WILDCATS player-coach Ryan Aldridge believes the weekend’s two results illustrate his side’s frustrating inconsistency so far this season.

After beating Basingstoke Bison 3-2 in overtime on Saturday, Swindon travelled to Milton Keynes last night and were on the wrong end of a 5-2 scoreline.

Aldridge was pleased with his side’s home showing against the Bison, but pointed out the glaring errors which have dogged his team, particularly on away ice.

“We played a very solid defence and a very solid all-round game against Basingstoke,” he said.

“Everybody did their jobs and hard work got us the win.”

Jan Krajicek had put the Wildcats ahead against the Bison on the powerplay with a sweeping effort on 7:01.

Jozef Kohut then crashed in a slapshot from range, also on the powerplay, to take the lead out to 2-0 on 10:44.

Basingstoke got themselves back in it on 45:48 when, with a five on three advantage, Ondrej Lauko blasted into the roof of the net.

And Bison man Sam Oakford added the fourth powerplay goal of the night with a low drive on 54:13.

But Raimonds Danilics set up the winner 21 seconds into overtime with a delightful dribble, with Aaron Nell tapping in from close range to seal the victory.

But against the Lightning, the Cats returned to their old ways - conceding three times on the powerplay and running themselves into trouble in their own half.

“There were a couple of goals which were mistakes which turned out to cost us,” said Aldridge.

“We weren’t getting the puck out and it was frustrating.

“They were points that we could have had.

“I am starting to wonder whether it is concentration or commitment which is the problem.

“Sometimes you have to take a hit to make a play rather than make one and we weren’t doing that tonight.”

Aaron Nell had given the Wildcats the lead on 1:35 before Andre Smulter equalised on 18:40.

In the second period Adam Carr made it 2-1 on 28:37 and Ross Bowers extended the advantage on 37:06.

Monir Kalgoum put the game beyond Swindon on 54:33 and, although Nell grabbed a consolation on 54:40, Milton Keynes had the last laugh as Smulter fired in their fifth on 56:01.

“I was very impressed with Saturday,” said Aldridge. “But we were caught running around tonight and we’ve lost to a team who are beatable.”

Meanwhile, it has been announced that Andy Finn and Sam Bullas have both made the Great Britain Under 20 squad following recent trials.
