ESSEX bowler David Masters says his favourite Olympic memory was seeing Essex girl Fatima Whitbread win a silver medal at Seoul 1988.
The 34-year-old seam bowler says he has memories of seeing Daley Thompson’s heroics in Los Angeles 1984, but that it was the javelin performance from South Ockendon’s Whitbread which gave him his first stand out memory of the Games.
He said: “I’ve always been a fan of the track and field stuff, and I remember going out to play and pretending to be Daley Thompson.
“But it was Fatima Whitbread in Seoul which really stood out for me.
“She was a true competitor and you could see how determined she was.
“The fact that she became such a household name shows what an impression she made.”
