THE first week of the Swindon & District Netball Association’s Winter League saw 50 teams playing last Saturday.

Lawn secured two wins – the B team beating Nationwide B and Lawn C beating Fairford B 40-27.

Fairford’s goal defence Chloe New was named player of the match, with wing attack Amy Dodson awarded Lawn’s player of the match.

Against Nationwide B, Lawn eventually won 37-30 with wing attack Sam Thomson named their player of the match.

In Division Five, Delta D beat Lawn E 38-23, newly-partnered shooters Ann Forrester and Lorel O’Cady putting in a strong performance.

Lawn D, a developing squad in Division Four, were narrowly beaten by Purton 25-20, while Abbey Meads A started the season with a 60-25 win over Pinehurst C in Division Two.

Player of the match for Abbey was centre Kathryn Johnson, while Anna Coleman returned in fine form after a three-year absence.

Abbey Meads continued their winning streak over Pinehurst, with a win in Division 5 – the E team beating their Pinehurst counterparts 41-15. Pinehurst’s A, B and D teams all won their games.

Abbey Meads C also won their game, beating Nationwide C 26-19.

Newly promoted to Division One, Razzle Dazzle proved to be worthy of their name – beating Corsham 59-30.

Fellow promoted side Raychem B narrowly beat Burmah A 32-28, Cally Warren playing only minutes at goal attack before having to be subbed due to injury.

Raychem played with the bare seven for all four quarters, Jo Worrall made an excellent return from maternity leave to be rewarded with the player of the match accolade, while new recruit Sophie Collins showed serious promise at goal defence.

In the Junior League, Lawn Netball Club under 14s and under 16s squads were unbeaten winners of the Wiltshire tournament at Dorcan.

Praise goes to Lauren Bruckshaw and Pat Durham for their hard work getting the teams prepared, with both teams going to Plymouth for the regional seeding tournament.

Croft ran the refreshment stand at Dorcan Dome, raising £428, with the money being donated to the Radiotherapy Unit at Great Western Hospital.
