SCRUM-HALF Connal Knott admitted Dorset & Wilts were killed off by Berkshire’s two quick scores after the break on Saturday.

The twin counties eventually went down to a 37-18 at Royal Wootton Bassett but pushed their opponents close before they streaked away after the break.

Knott was impressed with the standards his side set in what was their first game as a team, but admitted Berkshire just had that little bit too much.

“It wasn’t the result we wanted but it’s one of those things because we had such a new bunch of lads playing who hadn’t played for the county before,” he said.

“We didn’t get a few decisions our way and Berkshire did but we can’t moan about that too much and, to be honest, I really enjoyed it.

“There were plenty of good signs and we were unlucky really. We should have gone in at half time leading to be honest but we were behind, and in the second half they scored two quick tries and that was it.

“We missed some opportunities really but that comes from experience and the fact a lot of the guys hadn’t played for the team before eventually took its toll.

Dorset & Wilts’ players came from a lower level than the majority of their Berkshire opponents and Knott was pleased with the way his side coped, as well as being content with his own personal display.

“The Berkshire side had players from the leagues above us while we had players from level six and level seven, so it’s a massive performance just to compete.,” he said.

“You have to take your hat off to those players.

“I thoroughly enjoyed being back in the team at scrum half and I thought I did okay.”
