JASON Robinson has backed Swindon’s Jonny May to regain his place on England’s wing.

The 24-year-old Gloucester man, who took up the game at Royal Wootton Bassett, started England’s first two Six Nations matches but was eventually scrapped by head coach Stuart Lancaster in favour of Jack Nowell.

But former cross-code England star Robinson reckons that May has every chance of winning his country’s wing battle and forcing his way back into the national side.

“There’s no reason why Jonny can’t reclaim a starting jersey,” said Robinson.

“For a wing, one of the things you need to is be scoring tries and playing with confidence. You see what he does at Gloucester but it’s making sure you continue that and are consistent.

“Wing is one of the areas where England have not had much stability. It’s chopped and changed. You have Jonny May, Jack Nowell, Anthony Watson and others waiting in the wings.

“We haven’t got as much experience as we would like there but the flipside is we have guys who can score tries. We have pace and these guys will learn from the Six Nations and the competition right up until the World Cup.

“We’ve seen him score tries that not many people can, but he has to keep his head down, keep working hard and I’m sure another opportunity will come.

“He scored that great try against New Zealand. It came at a great time for him.

“He needed that as a player. As a wing, you quite often get judged on the tries you score and that was a special one.

“It showed what he can do against the biggest teams and the biggest names. It’s not that he can’t do it or has not proved it - it’s just that consistency that everyone is looking to attain.

“If I was a wing now, I would be working so hard over the next couple of months because it’s wide open.”
