APACHE proved they have plenty of firepower as they stormed to overall victory at the Swindon 7s on Saturday.

A dozen teams took part in total at Swindon RFC’s Greenbridge Road home, with a host of support in attendance on the day.

The teams were split into two groups of six, with each side playing five times before the trophy rounds ensued.

Apache and defending champions Ponty Butchers battled their way through the semi-finals before going head-to-head in the final, where Apache emerged triumphant thanks to a 24-19 success.

Welsh Charitables won the Plate competition after beating Silverbacks of host club Swindon, while Public School Wanderers overcame Takapuna Turtles to win the Bowl prizes.

Steve Steele, part of the event’s organising committee, said: “It was a great day. There were 12 teams there and they were largely of a very high standard.

“Apache were definitely worthy winners. They were a very good team. It was a close final but they played well throughout the day and certainly deserved to take the trophy.

“We had a lot of good comments from the teams and they all seemed to enjoy taking part.

“And there were a good amount of supporters there too. We had great weather, which helps, and several hundred people turned out to watch.

“This is our third year and it’s getting better every year. We seem to attract some top teams and people wanted to come back from last year.

“The organisation is superb and I’d say it’s the best 7s tournament in the South West.”
