SWINDON captain Adam Westall is hoping that his team can prove they are more than a fair-weather side when they face Swanage & Wareham.

Sean Lynn’s men are notoriously good starters when the sun is shining, but begin to struggle when the weather turns.

Westall is hoping that his team have more about them this season, having worked hard on that area of their game, but is still looking for Swindon to make the best possible start to the campaign.

“We are putting things in place to try and look at playing in different conditions, but you can only play what is in front of you,” he said.

“It looks like it will be dry on Saturday, so we will go out and try and play some rugby, but we are very aware that we have got to do the basics right first.

“Our mindset has been, at least since I have been captain, that we get ourselves safe first.

“In any league, it is pointless thinking about anything other than that, and then once we are safe, we then look at how well we did last year and try and go one better than that. Anything else on top of that is a pure bonus.

“Last season, we went a good few games unbeaten at the start of the year and we are following that trend, but I am sure Swanage will have something to say about that.”

Swindon play host to second-from-bottom Swanage at Greenbridge Road tomorrow and despite the visitors not winning a game yet, skipper Westall will not be taking them lightly.

Last year’s player of the season Mike Thompson will be back available at number seven but the home side will be without Connal Knott, Tim Berryand Josh Jensen, who will be away on international duty for Denmark.

“We know what they are about,” he added.

“They will be big up front and have a very good set piece, so we just need to get our game plan right and we are fairly confident that we will give anyone a good game on our day.

“They know how to compete at this level, and despite them not starting the best , they are still in their honeymoon period and I am sure it won’t take them long to get going.”

Swindon are currently top of South West One East.
