ALAN Low reckons Royal Wootton Bassett made harder work of their 36-26 success at Wimborne than was necessary.

Bassett scored four tries in Dorset to bag a bonus-point in win in Southern Counties South but continually let the home side back into the match.

Although a little frustrated with how his side went about their business, it was a good day for Low overall as his side ended a run of two straight defeats and there were also encouraging first-team debuts for Ashley Stephens and Elye Darragh.

“It was a frustrating one - every time we scored points, we made errors before clearing our lines,” said Low.

“There were some defensive errors that put us under pressure. We need to work on our exit strategies.

“With ball in hand, we played some good stuff but we have got to get both parts of the game right.

“It’s a difficult place to go so it was good to get a win after a couple of defeats.

“We had two debutants and both performed really well. Ash made a big difference at scrum-half and Elye was outstanding at centre.

“It’s great to see these guys coming up through and taking their opportunities.”

Skipper Dave Hogg gave Bassett the early lead with two kicks from the tee before flanker Gavin Ougan grabbed a superb individual try.

A Bassett fumble allowed Wimborne a touchdown of their own but teenage centre Darragh swiftly replied.

However, another Bassett error allowed Wimborne back into the match again and a second converted try cut the gap to 18-14 at the break.

A third Wimborne try saw them take an unlikely lead but Bassett began to pile on the pressure and Hogg dotted down to restore their advantage.

Alex Norcross then got Bassett’s fourth try to secure the bonus point and although there were a few nervy moments late on when the visitors got a third try of their own, another Hogg penalty took his personal tally to 21 points and sealed the win.
