HEAD coach Alan Low is hoping that his Royal Wootton Bassett side will pack a punch when they return to action this weekend.

With no game last weekend, Bassett opted to mix things up in training last week, heading over to Scrappers Gym for a boxing session on Tuesday before some valuable team bonding days later.

Low’s men get back into the thick of things when they host Sherborne in what is only their second home fixture of the season and the Ballard’s Ash boss is hoping that his team of budding Mike Tysons are ready to go the distance on Saturday.

“It was good fun over with Paul Rogers at Scrappers. It was good fun and a really jovial session,” said Low.

“I think the guys enjoyed it and Paul let a few of them get in the ring at the end and there were a few call-outs and things like that – it was all good fun.

“We then all went for a team meal on the Thursday, which is always a nice thing to do, before upping the intensity in training this week.

“Hopefully everyone is raring to go for this Saturday.

“It feels weird to say that it’s almost November and we’re only playing our second home game but it’s one of our VP (vice presidents’) days, so there should be a good crowd there.

“There should be 100-odd vice presidents there on the day and they always support the lads well, so hopefully they enjoy that.”

Bassett finished third in Southern Counties North last term before switching to Southern Counties South, where this weekend’s visitors Sherborne also finished third.

Low added: “I know that Sherborne like to play a bit of rugby. They put faith in their backs and a few of their forwards have been in and around the county circuit.”

n ROYAL Wootton Bassett Colts A extended their unbeaten run in Dorset & Wilts Premier to a fifth game with a 36-0 victory over Keynsham A.

Two tries in the first 15 minutes for winger Harry Russ set Bassett on their way and, despite an injury to captain Jake O’Neill, they extended their lead before the break.

A scrum was won against the head and Dan Sweeney chipped through for Tom Davies to go over.

With two conversions from Sweeney also splitting the posts, Bassett’s lead was 19-0 at half-time.

Just nine minutes into the second half a well-worked lineout allowed Rhys Jones to carry forwards and centre Elye Darragh crossed the line.

Skipper O’Neill then returned to the field and added two further tries before the final whistle.

Louis Cowling, Jake Hughes Miles, Jason Went and Rhys Cliff all enjoyed impressive A team debuts.

Meanwhile, the Colts’ B team made it a perfect weekend as they were 16-5 winners away at local rivals Supermarine.

A good platform was laid by Bassett’s forwards with only resolute home defence keeping the visitors out.

However, Bassett’s dominance was rewarded when number eight Cian Erry crossed the line, with William Fieldsend adding the conversion.

After 33 minutes Fieldsend stroked over a penalty after an infringement to extend the lead to 10-0 at half-time.

Following a discussion between match officials, Bassett were reduced to 14 men early in the second period after a collapsed maul. From the resulting penalty, Supermarine were able to cross the whitewash.

With Bassett restored to 15 men in the closing stages, they were able to pull clear before the final whistle as Fieldsend added two further penalties.
