SWINDON College Old Boys’ Mark Williams was a deserved winner of the volunteer of the year at the first annual Dorset and Wiltshire RFU Volunteer of the Year Awards according the the club’s director of rugby Martin Lloyd.

He said: “He is an elder statesman of the club and is very well respected here. I’ve known him for 25 years I don’t think I’ve ever seen him angry or upset he just doesn’t have it in him.

“I think it is vital everyone gets recognition, it’s strange, the people that really deserve recognition hardly ever get it.

“Mark does everything, he’s a great ambassador for the club, he ferries people around, sorts out runs, gets people to matches he does absolutely everything.”

Lloyd also said volunteers like Williams are the ‘lifeblood’ of the sport at the lower levels of rugby.

He said: “We wouldn’t exist, it is as simple as that. It is the people behind the team whether you are fixture secretary, match day secretary they are the lifeblood of the clubs and it’s absolutely vital these people get this recognition.”

Williams had his award accepted on his behalf by Tom Birnie at the Royal Chase Hotel in Shaftesbury.
