SWINDON College Old Boys head coach Mark Lea hopes his side can avoid a potential banana skin when they face bottom of the league Phoenix.

Lea’s men have a perfect record so far this season with seven wins, which sees them sit at the top of the Berks/Bucks & Oxon Premier table.

Despite their faultless start to the campaign, Lea is adamant his side have to approach the game just like any other.

“They’re bottom of the league but they put together a good performance against Abingdon last week,” said the Old Boys coach.

“They’ve had some strange results so you never know what they are going to bring, we have to do what we have been doing every game.

“We have to make sure we train well and that we approach the game well, there is no poor team in this league.

“If you approach a game wrong then you could ship a few tries early so we have to make sure we are on our game and that we go through our processes.”

As a potential motivation for the players to ensure they maintain their high standards against the league strugglers, Lea plans to tell his players they are playing for their spot in the cup final against Weymouth and Portland a week later.

“The cup final is the week after so I emphasised that people are playing for their places in that game, we will rotate a little bit to give some people some first-team experience,” added Lea.

“I think the cup final and people playing for places is a good motivation against complacency, we are definitely seeing more people available at the moment which is good.

“Greig O’Brien tore his calf, which is disappointing because he was an older head who had really come into the side so he will be a big loss.”
