ROYAL Wootton Bassett head coach Alan Low reveals his players are desperate to play against Reading Abbey this week after their last match was postponed.

Bassett had travelled up to Oxfordshire to take on the Oxford Harlequins, only for the game to be called off due to a frozen pitch.

The postponement came much to the frustration of Low, who says his side just need to move on from last weekend’s disappointment.

“It is one of those things, it happens, you just crack on and get on with it,” said Low.

“We were in a position where we wanted to get up there and play, we got all of our prep in for the week.

“The pitch wasn’t safe to play on, it was frozen. Hopefully the weather is okay this week because we are desperate to play.

“The boys will be chomping at the bit after a week off, they’ll want to get out and play.”

This weekend, Low’s team will prepare to play host to Reading, who have the same amount of points as the home side.

The visitors are one place above the Wiltshire outfit, having won seven and drawn one of their 16 fixtures.

However, Bassett head coach isn’t too sure what to expect from this week’s opposition, as they look to record their first win of 2017.

“They were a rather abrasive side when we went up there and they disrupted a lot of our ball,” he said.

“We will be expecting much of the same, they’ll be organised at the front and they'll get the ball out wide.

“We’ve been a little bit frustrated with performances in the last few outings because we could have done better, but it is a learning curve.”

Many will have seen the club’s injury list as a negative on the season so far, but the Bassett chief thinks it could be beneficial in the long run.

“We had a great start to the year and then we have picked up a load of injuries, but it’s great for the club that the younger players are getting the exposure,” added Low.

“When these players are back fit, they’re now fighting for their places which will help strengthen the second team massively.

“As a club, you can’t go up and maintain league position with 20 players, this season we have had to develop more than 20 players.”
