SWINDON finally brought an end to their winless streak in South West One East as they triumphed 41-20 at home to Oxford Harlequins at the weekend.

Sean Lynn’s side have had a long wait for victory following a run of eight straight defeats, which stretched back to early November.

But a man-of-the-match performance from Jordan Sheppard, who scored two tries, set them well on their way to ending their winless drought.

Adam Westall, Johnny Morison and Charlie Cox also crossed the whitewash as Swindon claimed maximum points at home.

Skipper Mike Thompson thinks this win could be the start of a turnaround in fortunes for the Greenbridge Road side.

“We needed a win and I think we needed a big win as well just for the boys to pick up their spirits a bit,” said Thompson.

“It just shows what we can do and it was nice to see it all come together, to be honest.

“For 60 minutes we were really good, really clinical and we kept doing the basics very well, but again we had a 20-minute period where we shut off.

“Since Christmas, it has been different. We have had some tight losses to teams who are at the top of the table.

“At the same time, our performances have been building. We are there now, it’s started to click.

“We just have to keep moving forward with it. Everyone is training and it is starting to show now.”

As much as Thompson would like to maintain the momentum gained from the win, his side are without a fixture at the weekend, much to the frustration of the Swindon skipper.

“We have a weekend off, which probably isn’t the best time for it. Sometimes it is good to get a break because you get the chance to heal,” he added.

“But we don’t have any injuries or anything. It is only one week and we will still be training, so we can talk about that.

“We can’t change the results from earlier in the season so we need to put in some performances between now and the end of the season.

“We are too good to go down with the skill level we have got, so all we need to do is get some wins and get in the safe zone.”

The break means Thompson’s side have to wait until February 11 to play their next game, where they will make the trip to face Reading, who are currently bottom of the league.
