AN INJURY hit Royal Wootton Bassett were able to record their first win in seven outings as they stumbled past Reading at Ballards Ash.

Bassett started positively, with the forwards commanding the game that resulted in an early score for the hosts.

Despite letting a couple of tries slip, the hosts were able to see out the 19-10 victory and Low felt his side were unfortunate not to claim a bonus point by the end.

“I wouldn’t say it was a good result, it wasn’t the best performance from us but it was nice to get a win on the board,” said Low.

“The guys had their backs up against the wall a bit because the curse of the injuries struck again, which was fun.

“They adapted and managed to get through it and got over the line.

“The work-rate and the character, you can’t fault it at the moment.

“It’s putting into practice some of the simple bits, the simple instructions, keeping your head, and we’ve got to remember there have been lots of changes week in, week out.

“At the start of the season, we had a fairly consistent side, and at the moment, it is different every week.

“Whilst we are creating opportunities and giving guys a go at Level Six rugby, it’s also hard to get that consistency when the team is changing a fair bit.”

Second team captain Alex Norcross returned for his first game back since the beginning of December from the bench as Low tried to plug the gaps and the Bassett coach will be looking forward to a break this weekend to help reduce their injury list.

“We went into the game with one back on the bench and after 10 minutes, in the same incident, we lost two backs,” added Low, who hopes Tim Gallimore and Will Hooper will both get a run out for the second XV against Supermarine this coming weekend.

“We lost Ieuan Brown and Ieuan Clements in the same phase of play.

“We ended up with five front-row forwards on the field and we had to send our replacement hooker onto the wing and then we changed that and a second row went onto the wing and we got through it.”
