SWINDON skipper Paul Daniels believes his side are too good for the drop despite being perched precariously in the Southern Counties North relegation zone.

The Greenbridge Road outfit sit second bottom of the table with just two wins from nine matches, and Daniels admits the statistics do not make happy reading.

But with several key players set to return from injury in the coming weeks, including Daniels himself, the captain is confident Swindon can still turn their season around.

He said: “We are by no means the second worst team in the league. When everyone is fit I would place us in the top three.

“After next weekend we have reached the halfway point in the season, and that usually gives a good indication of where you are going to end up.

“We are focussed on winning these next two matches because if we stay where are we will get relegated.

“That won’t happen though. I know the quality of this squad, and I won’t let it happen.

“We have a very good squad and once everyone is fit again we should put a bit of a run together.”

Swindon visit Wantage outfit Grove tomorrow looking to secure back-to-back league wins for the first time this season.

And with Grove just one point clear of their rivals in the table, Daniels admits the pressure is on to produce a big performance.

“It’s a massive game for both sides this weekend because the winners will move up into mid-table,” he said.

“The victory a couple of weeks ago has boosted confidence and now we need to build on that.

“Our expectation at the start of the year was to go for promotion, so it has been a knock-back to find ourselves near the bottom.

“It is disappointing to be down there but the league table doesn’t lie. In my mind it has nothing to do with ability, there’s just no continuity at the moment and that’s the problem.

“A lot of the key players have been out injured, and once they are back things should start to look up.”

Wootton Bassett will expect to put another tick in the win column tomorrow when they host Tadley in Southern Counties South.

Meanwhile, resurgent Swindon College are eyeing another two points at home to Abingdon in the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Premier.

Pick of the games in Dorset & Wilts One North is the clash between title-chasing Marlborough and struggling Cricklade.
