SWINDON College Old Boys enjoyed a rampant weekend as the first and second teams totalled 199 points between them in comprehensive victories over Abingdon and Wootton Bassett 3rd.

In the Berks/Bucks and Oxon Premier, Martin Peaple’s Old Boys fought past a strong initial 15 minutes from their visitors to run riot after the break.

A procession of tries, including seven in 11 second half minutes, triggered an Abingdon self-destruction.

But it was the performance of the Old Boys in the opening quarter, and their refusal to budge under pressure which laid the foundations for the stunning win, which pleased boss Peaple more than the anything.

“We did as well as we have done throughout the season,” he said.

“Abingdon were all over us in the first 10 minutes but we battled on through, pushed it about a bit and started to dominate.

“We took our chances and were impressive up front.”

In the first half only rigid Old Boys defence prevented Abingdon from seizing an early advantage and the 22-0 half-time score line reflected a balance in play which the final result could not suggest.

But after the interval Old Boys let loose. The physical presence of the pack overwhelmed their young opposition, and despondency spread through the Abingdon ranks.

“Heads started to go down and it became a little easier for our boys,” admitted Peaple.

“But the lads worked really hard, it was a tough game.

“We put out a good all-round display.”

James Harman, James Murray, Ross Saville and Stuart Knight got the first half scores for the hosts.

Second half touch downs came very regularly courtesy of Matt McKee (4), Ross Peters, Michael Calvert, Ashley Brown (2), Murray and Kevin Barker.

“To be honest they were a very young side,” said the Old Boys boss.

“When you think about it a 19-year-old colt is not going to stand much chance of stopping a 20-stone, hard-running Matt McKee.

“Occasionally it got a bit one-sided, but it was a good Saturday.”

This season has been somewhat of a revelation for Old Boys.

They currently find themselves sitting pretty on top of the league table having racked up almost 200 points in their first four fixtures, and conceded just 28.

And Peaple is delighted with the situation the club finds itself in at present - with the daunting test of fellow high-flyers Alchester to come in the next fortnight.

“It’s been excellent, really excellent,” he commented.

“And it’s not just the results but also the level of commitment at the club.

“We’ve regularly got 30 people coming to training, which is really good for this time of year.

“Everyone’s enjoying it.

“But it’s difficult to win the league - a couple of slip-ups and it’s gone.

“So we have to keep concentrating and see it through.”

Swindon were on the wrong end of a hiding at the hands of Milton Keynes in Southern Counties North.

Neil Loader’s side, who had been narrowly beaten by Grove in their previous outing, fell foul of a 53-7 scoreline to their fellow strugglers in Buckinghamshire.

Swindon have only managed a solitary win so far this term and find themselves in a scrap at the lower end of the league despite the season’s early stage.
