SUPERMARINE coach John Godsell has warned his side that they are far from the finished article, despite their convincing 29-5 win at Corsham 2nd at the weekend.

The South Marston outfit elevated themselves to midtable in the Dorset and Wilts One North with an impressive performance built around the display of their pack.

Neutrals could be forgiven for thinking that Supermarine would be delighted by the result, but Godsell saw it differently.

“We made a lot of mistakes out there,” he said.

“We gave the ball back to them on too many occasions, missed touch and didn’t kill them off when we had the opportunity.

“I’m happy to win but we’re still very much a work in progress.”

Supermarine lost lock Craig Parr to the sin bin inside 10 minutes but this seemed to spark the pack into action and their strength began to show.

The visitors took the lead when Jeff Barrett finished off a well-worked backs’ move, made possible by strong running from centre Sean Higgins.

Sean Millwaters added a fine wide conversion.

The lead was extended when prop Robin Smith was the recipient of a glorious inside pass from hooker Jamie Barrett, who had wrong-footed the defence with a step and dummy.

Millwaters missed the conversion but then touched down a try of his own as Supermarine moved the game beyond the reach of their hosts.

Corsham scored a disputed try soon after the resumption, before Godsell’s men hit back with a well-constructed try from Jamie Barrett, with Smith this time supplying the scoring pass.

The superior scrummaging of the Supermarine forwards proved an excellent platform in the second half and saw the back line create a multitude of scoring opportunities.

Man of the match Paul Fitchett scored a superb individual try to finish things off, as he collected the ball in midfield, drove through several sets of defenders and grounded under the posts, with Millwaters making no mistake with the conversion.

n Elsewhere in the division, Cricklade suffered a big defeat as they were beaten 31-7 by visiting Avonvale.

n Supermarine’s second string were defeated 37-0 by Trowbridge 2nd at the weekend.

It was the first team that the men in blue had been beaten this term.

The result sees the Blades lying in second place in Dorset and Wilts Three North.

They are just two points off high-flying Corsham, who hold top spot at present.
