WOOTTON Bassett shrugged off the effects of seven weeks without a fixture to stroll to a 51-8 victory at Broadmoor Staff in Southern Counties North on Saturday.

Tries from J-P Travis (2), Ieuan Clements, Grant Murdoch, Jonny Clarke, Billy Johnston and Gary Williamson ensured Bassett claimed an additional bonus point, as they look to keep pace with Swindon at the top of the division.

Vice-captain Tim Gallimore was pleased with the overall nature of the Bassett display, even though the away side found it hard to find any real fluency in the early exchanges.

“We really were a little untidy in the first half, there were a lot of unforced errors,” he said. They (Broadmoor) like to keep the game alive, I’m not sure they have much confidence in their pack and set-pieces, and that helped us a bit.

“After such a big gap we looked at the fixture and thought it could be a bit of a banana skin, so in the end we’re quite happy we got the result.”

Gallimore was simply happy to be back in action after such a significant lay-off due to the harsh weather.

And with plenty of games still to be played, Bassett can still eye up the prospect of an automatic return to South West 1 East.was excited to get out there,” he said.

“It’s a big few weeks for us now with some tough league games and a cup semi-final, but we’re ready for it and looking to get out there.”
