SWINDON Speedway have agreed the full transfer of Simon Stead to his hometown club Sheffield.

The 32-year-old spent four seasons with the Robins from 2009-12 and was a member of the team who finally ended the club’s long wait for an Elite League title in the last of those campaigns.

In the last two years he has been on loan with the Tigers in the Premier League whilst doubling-up with King’s Lynn and then Leicester, and he will now become a Sheffield asset.

Swindon promoter Alun Rossiter said: “Simon is settled at Sheffield, it’s his local track and at this stage of his career it’s a move that makes sense for him.

“Obviously with both ourselves and Sheffield being Thursday night tracks, we wouldn’t be able to consider him for our team anyway.

“I’d like to thank Simon for his service to the club, and certainly his place in our history is assured after his contribution in 2012 including his great performance in the Final at Poole. We all wish him well for the future.”

Stead added: “I had a fantastic time as a Swindon asset, and signed off by winning the Elite League title in 2012 which was a perfect way to end my time there.

“I enjoyed my time at Swindon, but I’m just delighted to be back at Sheffield, where I’m number one and captain.”
