GREAT Britain boss Alun Rossiter believes his side still have a fighting chance of making it to the World Cup final after being beaten to a guaranteed spot by Australia last night.

Rossiter’s side went up against Mark Lemon’s Aussie side, which had Swindon Robins’ riders Troy Batchelor and Nick Morris among their foursome, as well as USA and Latvia at King’s Lynn’s Adrian Flux Arena.

Despite USA boasting three-time World Champion Greg Hancock in their team it was a battle between GB and Australia for the automatic place in Saturday’s final in Denmark.

It was a plucky performance from Rossiter’s young team, which included Tai Woffinden, Chris Harris, Danny King and Robert Lambert, but they were always behind the Aussies on the night and came up four points short.

GB must now prepare for a Race-off in Vojens, Denmark, on Thursday night but Rossiter was proud of the way his side conducted themselves.

“I was pleased with the boys' performance,” he said after the meeting.

“Everybody gave it their all and I couldn’t ask for much more than that really. We we’re beaten by the best team on the night but it is such a fine line.

“We all knew Australia would be tough but I have got no complaints about how we went about our business.”

Rossiter’s foursome will go up against Poland, Russia and USA, who finished in third place in Norfolk, on Thursday night.

Poland will go into the meeting as favourites but the Swindon Robins boss is confident that his team can achieve their goal of making the final.

“Looking forward now to Thursday, everybody keeps saying that Poland are the big threat but, if they bring in the other Laguta (Grigory), Russia are going to be the ones to watch as well,” added the GB team manager.

“I think the boys will go home and try and sort some stronger engines out for Denmark and get ready to go again.

“It is more of a British track and it will certainly suit us a lot more and I certainly don’t think we are out of it for sure.

“It would be a super effort to make it to the final on Saturday and that is our goal.”
