KYLE Howarth says he will not be overawed by his tough draw as he goes for glory in this evening’s British Speedway Final in Wolverhampton.

The cream of the country’s crop will descend on the Midlands tonight in a bid to get their hands on the most prestigious title on the domestic calendar.

Young Swindon Robins hotshot Howarth will be up against it, though, as he has been pitted against seven-time national champion Scott Nicholls in his first heat at Ladbrokes Stadium.

Although he admits he will be hard pressed to repeat the heroics that saw him crowned British Under-21 champion earlier in the year, Howarth insists he will go into battle without any fear.

“It’s a big competition and everyone wants to win it. It’s a big event for everyone in British speedway so it will be nice to do well but there is a long way to go yet,” said Howarth.

“Scott is a great rider, with loads of experience, but you have got to try to not look at stuff like that. It’s about how you drop the clutch and how you get to the first corner.

“I’ll just go there and do my best and see what happens. Everyone is beatable at the end of the day, so I just need to go up there and do my job, make some gates like I have been doing, and see what happens.

“I don’t mind the track at Wolverhampton. It’s a bit of a technical track and it catches people out at times, so you have to be on your toes and be a bit clever.”

Howarth has returned to Britain in buoyant mood on the back of his first senior international call-up last week.

The 21-year-old was a watching reserve as Team GB agonisingly missed out on a place in the World Cup Final, being edged out by Poland in a race-off in Denmark last Thursday.

British team captain Tai Woffinden will be the man to beat in Wolverhampton as he goes in search of a third straight national title, while Howarth’s Team GB team-mates Chris Harris and Danny King will also be in action.

Woffinden had a perfect night in Vojens last week, recording six heat wins from six rides for a haul of 21 points – a performance that left Howarth spellbound.

“Tai is world class. He’s at the top of his game and he is the man to beat at the moment,” said Howarth.

“We were all team-mates last week but this week, we are up against each other but stuff like that doesn’t really matter because at the end of the day, we are here to race.

“This is our job and we’re all used to it, so we’ve just got to go up there and do what we’ve got to do.”
