SWINDON Robins asset Jason Doyle has called on British Speedway bosses to consider making serious changes or risk losing the sport altogether ahead of the annual general meeting this weekend.

The Aussie would like to see British speedway moved to one night a week like they do in Poland, on a Sunday night, and Sweden, on a Tuesday.

The 30-year-old believes that making a significant change like that would not only help boost crowd numbers but would also mean big name riders, like himself, would find it easier to fit riding in the UK into their schedules.

“It would be nice for England to have one night a week and you know that your race day is in the week, or whatever day they can do,” he told the Adver.

“It is a major thing they need to look at it.

“The problem is with most of these promoters is that they are all old fashioned and you need some new blood.

“You need to change the league around or you are going to lose the league.

“Everybody is saying that the crowds are dropping but there has been no change for the last 10 years in British speedway apart from the fast-track system.

“I think if they don’t bring some new ideas then I don’t know what is going to happen. They have to all get together and think of a way to bring the big names back.”

Doyle also believes that there needs to be a re-think when it comes to the fast-track system. The system was brought in for the 2014 season to ensure that every club had two British youngsters who had passed through the National League at reserve.

However, Doyle has been left unconvinced by the system with certain teams gaining an unfair advantage.

“I don’t think it is a good system,” he added. “It is unfair. Leicester have been on the receiving end of having struggling fast-track riders.

“This year we had some good boys, but last year we had some younger kids and it wasn’t their fault that we went bad, there were other fast-track kids who shouldn’t have been in the system.

“I know riders who were in the fast-track system and they started the same year I started. I think they should have an age limit and if they are going to have fast-track again they need to make the league a bit fairer and not throw the two best fast-track kids in one team.”

Doyle will contest the final Speedway Grand Prix event of the year in Melbourne next weekend, after finishing second in the Polish event earlier this month.
