SWINDON Robins skipper Jason Doyle has urged the BSPA to limit racing in the Elite League to one night a week in an effort to make competition in the sport in Great Britain as strong as possible.

At present, English clubs can choose when they schedule their home meetings, leading to a packed domestic calendar.

The new Elite League campaign gets under way when King’s Lynn Stars host Lakeside Hammers on Thursday, with the crammed schedule highlighted by the fact there are fixtures booked on 11 nights in the opening fortnight of the season.

That has turned many of speedway’s top stars away from riding for clubs in Britain and Australian ace Doyle has urged the sport’s governing body to bring the Elite League in line with other top divisions in Europe in an effort to attract them back.

“The problem with English speedway is that it needs to be on a one-night-a-week basis, like Poland and Sweden are,” said Doyle, who joins the Robins for the 2016 season from Elite League rivals Leicester Lions.

“Once that happens, the big boys will come back and I think the Elite League will be the Elite League again. At the moment, it’s building its way back up again.

“It’s still going to be a good year and the riders we have got in our team are capable of being in the Elite League.”

Doyle, who will ride at number one for Swindon this season, is a fan of new BSPA chairman Keith ‘Buster’ Chapman, who took over from Alex Harkness in the off-season.

The 30-year-old also quashed fears over the long-term future of British speedway and hopes that under his watch, King’s Lynn promoter Chapman can breathe new life into the sport in this country.

“The best thing that the BSPA has done in the last year is bring in Buster Chapman. I think English speedway is going to go up now and not go down,” said Doyle.

“I think he is an ultimate professional, being a business owner, and also, he has got some great ideas for the sport and it’s not going to go stale.

“You hear every year that the promoters are going broke and they don’t have the money but every year, they are always coming back, so they must be earning some sort of money.”
