SWINDON Robins team manager Alun Rossiter is looking forward to a good old-fashioned race-off when his side travel to the new National Speedway Stadium tonight.

Rossiter’s side are due to take on the Belle Vue Aces (tapes-up 7.30pm), in what will be the Manchester outfit’s long-awaited first Elite League meeting at their recently-built £7million home, which will be British speedway’s new national venue.

A raft of postponements mean that the Aces are yet to ride competitively at their new state-of-the-art arena and Rossiter reckons that both teams riding on a track they have yet to get to grips with will chuck the cat among the pigeons.

“It’s going to be just as unfamiliar for them as it is for us,” said the Robins boss.

“It’s going to be a level playing field and a good time to go there and pick up some points – simple as that.

“We’ll just go there with the same attitude that we’ve had for the last five or six meetings.

“That’s except for Wolverhampton (a 48-44 loss on April 14) – we’ve learned our lessons from that, we’ve spoken about it and we’ll come stronger again.”

Swindon have won three meetings on the spin and captain Jason Doyle also believes that Belle Vue’s unfamiliarity with their new track will benefit the Robins.

He said: “That’s probably a good thing for us because they’re not going to be able to dial their bikes in as much as if they’d been riding there all year.

“So if we get up there and hit them hard in the first few heats, their heads will drop and we’ll able to do a good job.”

Doyle scored a scorching 15-point maximum in Swindon’s 50-40 win over Lakeside Hammers last week and his form has seemingly carried on from his performance in the opening round of the Speedway Grand Prix late last month, where he finished second in Slovenia.

The Aussie racked up 13 points from his seven rides and believes that he laid down a positive marker for the rest of his World Championship campaign.

“It’s good to get the first one out of the way.

“There were a lot of nerves, a lot of head games and after organising pretty much my whole team to get into the Grand Prix, it was nice to finally sit on the bike and just ride,” said the Swindon skipper.

“The first two rider weren’t too good but I jumped on the spare bike and things started coming together, with making the finals – it was a good night for myself.

“If you don’t get the points early on, there’s a lot of head games and riders think they’re a lot better than you. You can just get swept away so quickly.”
