JOSH Grajczonek says it was imperative the Swindon Robins signed off for their break on a winning note following their victory at Leicester Lions on Saturday.

Having started last week’s busy spell on the back of a six-meeting unbeaten run, the Robins slipped off the pace in alarming fashion and were beaten three times in four days.

Elite League champions Poole Pirates inflicted home and away defeats on Alun Rossiter’s troops, while bottom side Leicester were also victorious at the Abbey Stadium.

Swindon were able to claw back some respectability with a hard-fought 46-44 success away at the Lions on Saturday and with the Robins now out of action until June 16, Australian Grajczonek admits they can head into the hiatus resting a little easier.

“We didn’t really have a good week on the road or at home, so we needed to pick up our act and we did that,” said Grajczonek.

“We bounced back and got three points and we are pretty happy with that. We all want to do well and be in the play-offs come the end of the season, so that was an important result.

“Another loss wouldn’t have sat too well with us, the management or the fans either. We can go into this week with a win and hopefully it’s a little bit of a make-up for our losses.”

Grajczonek enjoyed his most fruitful night of the week at Leicester’s Beaumont Park, finishing with a haul of 9+1 points from five rides.

However, that outcome did not look likely after his opening two rides, which saw the 26-year-old record just a single point.

A change in bike turned the tide, though, and only Swindon skipper Jason Doyle was able to beat Grajczonek for the remainder of the evening.

“I struggled at the start and rode one bike for the first two heats and only got one point. I wasn’t too happy, so I jumped on the other bike and was unbeaten after that,” said Grajczonek, who missed out on a ride in Heat 15 to Justin Sedgmen, despite winning the previous race.

“A change is as good as a holiday sometimes and it sort of revamps you. I swapped bikes and it came good in the end and to get a good result on the road; we’re pretty happy with that.

“We spoke about Heat 15 and Sedgy was coming off the starts a little bit better than me, so we went with that option. He’d made a real good start to Heat 13 off the inside gates, so we thought Sedgy would be one for the first turn.

“It’s a shame Sedgy finished at the back (in Heat 15) but we got the 3-3 and that’s all that mattered and it got us the win.”
