NEW Swindon Robins recruit Bradley Wilson-Dean wants to arrive at the Abbey Stadium in 2017 with even more championship-winning pedigree to his name.

Wilson-Dean was part of the Somerset Rebels team that won the Premier League – British speedway’s second tier – this year but has since been snapped up by the Robins as they prepare for the inaugural campaign in the new-look SGB Premiership next year.

The 22-year-old is keen to expand his trophy cabinet even further before he suits up in Swindon colours and has set his sights on victory at this weekend’s New Zealand Speedway Championships, which takes place at Oreti Park at the bottom of the South Island.

Saturday’s competition is the latest event on a busy winter schedule for Wilson-Dean, who hails from Hastings on the North Island, as he wants to make sure he arrives at Blunsdon in tip-top form.

“I am going there hoping to win it. Hopefully I will come back to England in February next year as New Zealand champion, that’s the goal,” said Wilson-Dean.

“I won’t have too much of a rest before I come over to England because we have got another New Zealand title to race for in January – the New Zealand Grand Prix – in Auckland, which is five hours from my home.

“The week after, I am travelling back home to run a training school for kids.

“You don’t get much time off here, you are always on the road. I will keep going, I want to make sure I am on the bike as much as possible before I get back to England.

“I will try to keep my mind away from it but also keep my mind on it as well because you want to be doing as much as you can but also enjoying your Christmas break as well.”

Wilson-Dean was a late addition to the Robins’ roster, with his signing announced on December 9 after Swindon were forced to pull out of a deal for Danish teenager Mikkel Brondum Andersen after his adjusted average took the team over the 50-point limit.

As the final name on the Swindon 2017 septet, the Kiwi youngster cannot wait to meet up with his new team-mates, particularly Australian skipper and Speedway Grand Prix star Jason Doyle.

“He is the main man. I think everyone is going to be sponging off him for all that experience he has got,” said Wilson-Dean.

“Jason seems like the sort of guy that takes his racing very seriously and I am the same. I can’t wait to get there with him in the pits and soak it all up, it’s going to be awesome.”

Meanwhile, the Robins are to enter a side into the National Trophy next season, with the Swindon side featuring riders from sides who are not in the mini tournament.

Yesterday’s draw for the competition pitted the Robins in Pool Two alongside Isle of Wight Warriors and Plymouth Devils.
