NICK Morris believes Swindon Robins can arrive for their first home meeting of the new SGB Premiership season tonight with some good groundwork in place.

After getting their campaign under way away at Leicester Lions last Saturday, the Robins will ride in front of their home fans for the first time in 2017 this evening when they welcome Belle Vue Aces to the Abbey Stadium.

Robins team boss Alun Rossiter opted to make five rider changes to his roster over the winter and although their debut outing as a team ended in defeat at Beaumont Park – they at least had the consolation of a losing point.

Morris, who was one of only two men retained from last season’s septet alongside skipper Jason Doyle, thinks it would be foolish to expect the new-look team to be a cohesive unit straightaway but thinks they have already laid some solid foundations to be a success.

“We have had a couple of practices at Swindon now so the boys are getting to know the track,” said Australian Morris.

“It’s not going to happen overnight, the season has only just started and the boys are going to take a bit of time to settle in. It’s early days but that was a good start up at Leicester and something to build off for the first home meeting.

“Last Saturday was the first meeting of the season and we are just settling in. All the boys haven’t done much racing and I think a couple of them hadn’t even ridden the Leicester track before, so to get a point is not so bad.”

Morris was Swindon’s star man against Leicester, scoring 13+1 points from five rides – although he was equally impressed by 19-year-old debutant Zach Wajtknecht, who led the Aussie home to take a stunning heat victory in just his second ride in the top tier of British speedway.

“It was good – just how I wanted to start the season. I got the bike working well and everything went sweet, so I am happy,” said Morris.

“Zach made a really good start (in heat four) and I didn’t want to put too much pressure on him, I just sat there. I saw Nicolai (Klindt) was having a few problems behind so I just sat back instead of coming storming under him and leaving him hanging. I tried to look after him and I will try to do that as much as I can.

“The starts were really slick on Saturday so if you didn’t have a good set-up, you were just sitting at the start line spinning up.

“Luckily I had a good set-up and I was getting out of the start but a few other guys struggled, I know Jason (Doyle) couldn’t get off the starts it was that slick, but we got the point so we can’t complain too much.”
