JAMES Clark made his last meet as a Swindon Dolphin swimmer one to remember as he smashed club records at ASA Nationals.

The 18-year-old, who will begin a sports science course at the University of Bath next month, gave his signature swims in the 50m freestyle at Ponds Forge in Sheffield.

Clark broke the club record with a 23.85-second swim in the quarter-final and he achieved the same feat in the semis, clocking 23.74 seconds after storming home in the last 15 metres.

Starting well off the blocks in the final, Clark held a fractional lead on the underwater phase but slipped back to level.

Three swimmers came past the Wiltshire youngster but Clark’s 23.49-second swim gave him joint-fourth and a third club record in a matter of hours.

The teenager, who joined Dolphin as a four-year-old on the Learn to Swim programme, was praised by Dolphin head coach Louise Clayton afterwards.

She said: “James has demonstrated the club’s ability to produce swimmers that can reach the top of British youth swimming. He has set an outstanding example for others to follow.”

Clark also competed in the 100m earlier in the championships and set new club records in the first round and semi-final.

However, his semi-final time of 52.64 seconds saw him just miss out on a place in the final and resulted in a 12th-placed finish overall.

Elsewhere, Lauren Matthews clocked a new personal best of 2:25.28 to end up 30th in the 200m butterfly.

The 17-year-old Charlotte Pitts set off at a fast pace in the 400m freestyle but struggled to maintain her form and ended up 27th in 4:34.25.

Matthews and Pitts also competed in the 4x200m freestyle relay team alongside Georgina Pitts and Victoria Jennings.

It was the second time in as many years that Dolphin had qualified for the event and the quartet finished in a slightly slower time than their entry time.

Jon Audis raced in the 100m backstroke in his 11th year of national qualification, and beat his entry time in heats with a respectable effort of 1:00.48.
