SWINDON swimmer Jazz Carlin is hoping that having a permanent home will help her in what is sure to be a career defining season after the official opening of the newly-refurbished £1.6million London 2012 Legacy Pool at the University of Bath, last week.

Carlin was left in limbo last year after the departure of her long-term coach Bud McCallister to Australia.

However, in December she took the decision to use the National Centre at Bath University as her full-time base, with Great Britain swimming coach David McNulty putting her through her paces.

The Swindon Tigersharks swimmer worked hard during the close season to put herself in the best position ahead of a big year in the pool and that has already started to pay off, with the 24-year-old claiming three gold medals at the British Championships in April.

And Carlin was able to carry on that form this month as she claimed four gold medals with a string of fine performances at the Mare Nostrum Series.

“Training was pretty difficult,” Carlin told the Adver.

“We were training down in Millfield in Somerset for six months and that was quite tough.

“It was really short days, we normally have longer recovery in between sessions, and it was difficult to change the programmes and all the training is different as well.

“I think with the British Championships it was good to give me confidence that the programme is working and everything is going well.

“I think it was tough with Bud leaving but I think I made the right choice training with Dave in Bath.

“Dave and Bud are very different. Bud was very relaxed and laid back, where as Dave is very passionate and very loud.

“It is very different ways of coaching and I think it has taken me a while to get used to it, it didn’t happen overnight because I was with Bud for seven years.

“It was never going to be an easy change over but it is going well.

“I have got a good coaching relationship and that is obviously important and we get on well so moving forward it has been a good move so far.”
