10:32pm

That's it from us, ladies and gents. A fabulous win to wrap up 2012 at the County Ground.

From all at the Adver sportsdesk a very merry Christmas and a happy new year. See you all at Brisbane Road on Boxing Day.

10:31pm

Andy Williams was disappointed not to have been able to complete his hat-trick after missing a second-half penalty, but was pleased with his two goals.

Swindon Advertiser: GOAL-GETTERS: James Collins and Andy Williams

ANDY WILLIAMS

“I have my routine because I have not missed before, and when I was putting the ball down I wasn’t able to keep it which I think contributed to the miss.

“But to score two goals was great, and for the first one Nathan put in a great cross down the right and I was able to finish well after a good first touch.

“For the second I managed to slide it in after a great ball from Matty, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to cap it off with the hat-trick.”

10:06pm

Di Canio wanted striker Chris Martin to take the penalty which Andy Williams missed this evening, but is not too angry about the incident.

Swindon Advertiser: Town's loan striker Chris Martin

CHRIS MARTIN

“I understand in England hat-trick is crucial for tradition, but it is a team performance.

“It is not a big criticise, and Chris Martin said him to take it, but Chris Martin should take it because he hasn’t scored yet.

“Andy Williams scored twice anyway and he is crucial, but Chris Martin wants one goal today and if he scores the goal it is a different mentality.”

Great result. But let's not get carried away just yet. Another 6 points out of 9 and I'd say that's a good Xmas.

9:58pm

Town boss Paolo Di Canio believes tonight's performance was one of the best of the season from his side.

Swindon Advertiser: POINTING THE FINGER: Paolo Di Canio during the win at Oldham

PAOLO DI CANIO

“For sure, because obviously we played against one of the best teams, a solid team.

“I was sure we would win this game but not in this manner, and we created another six clear chances.

“Even a person that knows nothing about football can understand tonight.

“We work hard even when we had two weeks off, and it was tough for them and the new players, but I have a group of lads who understand, it is tough but they can take advantage physically.

“With our quality, system, detail and desire, this is what can happen.

“We have played similar games and not scored as many goals, but this was perfect to say thanks to our fans in a fantastic way.

“But I want to say thanks to my players because it is not easy, but for me it is normal to see this commitment and desire.

“But we have done nothing yet and we have to keep going or we can burn what we have done.”

9:38pm

FULL-TIME: Swindon Town 5 Tranmere Rovers 0

9:37pm

90+2 minutes: Cassidy’s effort is deflected against the bar, which is as close as the visitors have come.

9:37pm

90 minutes: Foderingham has a rare save to make as he is equal to McGurk’s effort.

9:35pm

89 minutes: Martin's header flashes wide, and a yard in front of a flying Devera. Three minutes added.

9:32pm

9:30pm

For the first time the game has gone a little flat, but does anyone really care?

9:27pm

80 minutes: Roberts curls one over the bar after cutting inside well.

9:25pm

78 minutes: Hollands sees a shot blocked.

9:25pm

Every Town pass being cheered here, and despite not quite looking as threatening as they have during the rest of the game, Swindon are in complete control.

9:10pm

62 minutes: MISSED PENALTY: Bizarre scenes after Martin is felled in the box. Tommy Miller gives the ball to Williams for his hat-trick, but Di Canio seems to order Miller to take it. Eventually Williams steps up and misses, and Di Canio is livid, kicking the gate leading to the stand.

9:08pm

60 minutes: Williams wins a corner off Taylor, and when Ritchie delivers after it is taken shot appears to strike the hand of Kay. No penalty given, and to be fair the Town players didn’t appeal.

8:33pm

HALF-TIME: Swindon Town 4 Tranmere Rovers 0

8:33pm

45 minutes: A shot from Michael O’Halloran has an effort straight at Wes Foderingham, and that is it for a blistering first-half from Town.

8:28pm

39 minutes: Ritchie plays an absolutely perfect ball into the path of Thompson, and the right-back’s cross is deflected over with Martin lurking.

8:25pm

36 minutes: Cassidy pops a cross into the box, and Foderingham pounces on it well.

8:22pm

33 minutes: GOAL 4-0 TOWN (Ritchie) And the goals keep on coming!!! A cross-field ball from Simon Ferry finds De Vita, and the Italian’s first touch is one his manager would be proud of as he glides past Holmes and stroms into the area. The winger pulls it back and Williams forces a good save from fon Williams, and Ritchie is there to fire the ball home. What a half from the men in red!

8:19pm

30 minutes: Williams beats the offside trap and has plenty of time to shoot, but gets his shot of a bit quick and from a wide angle and it is held by the keeper.

8:17pm

27 minutes: Another vicious drive from Ritchie is saved by fon Williams, some real movement in the shot there.

8:13pm

Top drawer stuff from Town so far, and that goal for Williams in particular could do him wonders. A real confidence player.

8:10pm

21 minutes: GOAL 3-0 TOWN (Williams) Thompson swings a ball in which Williams eventually controls and turns before firing into the bottom corner. Game over?

8:09pm

20 minutes: Martin bursts into the area and should score, but his shot is saved by fon Williams. Ritchie fires over after the ball is cleared.

8:08pm

19 minutes: Ritchie lets fly but his shot is blocked by Palmer.

8:06pm

17 minutes: Williams unleashes a vicious shot at goal, but fon Williams makes the save.

8:05pm

8:04pm

15 minutes: Power has another effort which Foderingham spills, but Jake Cassidy is offside as he goes for the rebound.

8:01pm

12 minutes: Max Power shoots wide for the visitors.

7:58pm

'You should have gone Christmas shopping' shout the Town fans.

7:57pm

Seven minutes GOAL 2-0 TOWN (De Vita): Williams is pushed wide when through by Ash Taylor, but Town keep the ball and after Hollands finds Raffa De Vita, the Italian fires home thanks to another deflection. What a start!

Sporting life has just reported a Town Goal but I refuse to believe until I see it on this page!

Believe it... and double it! We are sorry for the three minute delay, but them's the rules! What a start

7:56pm

Six minutes: Tranmere look to respond but Bakayogo’s effort is over.

7:54pm

Four minutes GOAL 1-0 TOWN (Hollands) But the danger doesn’t pass for the visitors, and after the ball is put back into the box it falls for Danny Hollands who rockets the ball into the back of the net with the help of a deflection off Liam Palmer.

7:54pm

Four minutes: De Vita puts in a corner, and after Devera heads it back across, Ward should score with a header of his own.

7:49pm

Looks like a decent crowd in here this evening, and some singing! Something the home fans at Oldham last weekend forgot to do. The 300 travelling Town fans were once again superb.

7:46pm

There is one other game in League One this evening, with Bury hosting Shrewsbury.

7:37pm

IN THE AWAY DUGOUT – Ronnie Moore

Swindon Advertiser: Ronnie Moore
Moore is in his fourth spell at Prenton Park, having made more than 400 appearances for the club in the 1971-79 and 1986-89.
The Liverpudlian started and finished his career with the club, and in between enjoyed a long spell with Rotherham as well as representing Cardiff, Rotherham, Charlton and Rochdale.

Swindon Advertiser:
The striker scored close to 150 goals during his long career, before starting his managerial career just down the road at Southport. His time there only lasted a year, and he quickly moved on to Rotherham where he enjoyed immense success as he took the unfancied Millers into the old Division One

It was during his time at Millmoor he was the victim of a hoax call, which he believed was offering him the Ipswich job, and he revealed he intended to accept it in a live television interview. It was eventually revealed the call was a hoax, and Moore remained in Yorkshire for a further three years until 2005.

Swindon Advertiser:

He then moved on to Oldham, and after helping them avoid relegation he led them to a mid-table finish the following year before moving on due to poor season ticket sales.

He was immediately offered the Tranmere job, and led them to an 11th place finish in his first season. They went into the final day of the following season needing three points against Scunthorpe to secure a play-off place, but after conceding a late equaliser Moore was given the sack.

Swindon Advertiser:

Moore returned to Rotherham for two largely uneventful years, before returning to the Wirral, where he has superbly guided Rovers to the top of the table.

7:36pm

With 10 minutes to go until kick-off, here's a quick reminder of how we're allowed to cover games on the Swindon Advertiser website.

Restrictions placed on journalists by Dataco mean we are unable to provide live text commentary. All in-play updates must be subjected to a three-minute delay.

If you are after up-to-the-second updates, log onto Twitter and follow chief sports writer Sam Morshead (@SamMorshead_SA).

Updates will appear on the Adver website but will be on delay.

Stick with us after the game for all the very best reaction to the evening's events.

7:32pm

While the County Ground is filling up we are being treated to the soulful sounds of a gospel choir.

7:29pm

Wayne Allison is clearly held in high regard by fans here at the County Ground, with the Chief back at his old stomping ground this evening to see two of his former clubs.

DANGER MEN - Tranmere's men to watch tonight

Swindon Advertiser:
Andy Robinson
Although he by no means is blessed with pace, Robinson is as tricky as they come in League One. He is capable of whipping in killer balls, and also scoring from distance, which he has proved during his time with Swansea and Leeds. Will need to be watched tonight, as he will take advantage of any space he is given.

Swindon Advertiser:

Jake Cassidy

The Wolves loanee has been in superb form in what is his second loan spell in the North West. He made his professional debut while with the club last season, and scored five goals in 10 games. His form was enough to earn a second spell this season, and he has been similarly effective this time around.

Swindon Advertiser:
Adam McGurk

The tricky forward began his career with Aston Villa, but struggled for any playing time and moved to Hendesford. He impressed there and moved to Tranmere in 2010, and he has found his groove as Rovers forced their way up the table. Has represented Northern Ireland at U21 level once.

Paolo Di Canio will be delighted with Swindon Town's start to the 2012/13 season, regardless of the result this evening.

In his pre-match press conference on Wednesday he said: “It was the same situation this time last year. If we win we are very close there for one night but if we lose the day after we can be 11th in the table.

“I look at the positives. If we win we are there, if we draw we stay close. There is a balance.

“There is not a team now apart from Bournemouth, with seven wins in their last 10 games, who have a very good moment. Maybe Coventry too.

“We want to stay close there because after Friday we are halfway to go.

“Forget sixth, seventh or 10th, because it can make a difference in your eyes. Even at worst, if we are eighth or 10th in the table but three or four points from the play-offs that is a really good result because of what has happened this year."

6:30pm

Good evening ladies and gents and welcome to the Advertiser’s final Matchday Live before Christmas, as Tranmere visit the County Ground.

With Town flying high after dominant performances against Doncaster and Oldham in recent weeks it seems now is the perfect time to welcome the league leaders to Wiltshire.

Tranmere have not won in five in the league and have seen their advantage at the top of League One completely obliterated.

But in Jake Cassidy and Andy Robinson Rovers have a strike partnership to be feared, and Swindon will have to be on top form to keep the visitors from the Wirral quiet.

You can keep up to date with all the latest from SN1 throughout the evening right here.

Here’s to an early Christmas present of three points and goals galore!

Great post buddy.

I like you, always feel frightened when logging on in the morning in case our amazing manager PDC has left by mutual consent.

I think PDC has/is amazing for our Club and his rants/comments are heart felt and he wears his heart on his sleeve....so what!!]

What he gives back in Passion, Committment, Desire, Courage and Proffessionalism far outways anything that some fans say he should shut up or leave!!!

Lets see those fans raise their heads now and be counted......

One happy, crying, silly old Swindon fan....having a few home brews on his own wishing he was in the County Ground now, sharing with real fans...........

Wow we have been threatening that all season and then go and turn the league leaders over in a breathtaking first half the best I have seen at the County Ground. The football was just out of this world and we could easily have been 8-0 up at half time. Ferry had the best game I have seen him play and what a shame he got injured. That was just an awesome game and poor Ronnie Moore must have been totally shell shocked just how easily his team were dismantled tonight and that they could suffer ever lasting damage from this game.Ritchie was on fire and MOM for me but the other 10 players could easily have got that title tonight. Thompson just gets better every game and looks a class act who needs Caddis. Ward and Devera simply outstanding and Hollands had his best game in a Town shirt. My poor old brother in law had to miss this game due to his works night out so he will be gutted but I did txt him the updates. What a Christmas prezzie from the Town players simply the best ever.

Awesome performance, thought we'd win but that was men against boys.

I think Tranmere must have scouted one of our long ball games, they just couldn't deal with our pace and one touch passing. Fantastic stuff.

Football is a funny old game how are they top of the league? It was bizarre they were standing off our players and looked scared to death of making a tackle. Lots and lots of individual errors too. My personal favourite was the right back who with a ball over the top being chased towards Town End by Roberts, bent over over while running, it him slap on his back and he saw it out for a corner. WTF?

Although Macca got man of the match (?) they all played so well but Williams stood out for me, he looked back to how he was just before he got injured. Bodes very well for the future. Martin looks a stone lighter than when he joined as well.

Should say a word for the defence as well, Ward and Devera quietly went about their business, and both full backs played well too. Deserved clean sheet.

Great stuff well done Paolo and the team.

Great performance. Tonight the players realised their true potential as a team. If we play with that energy and belief from now until the end of the season, we'll win the title easily. We don't need to add to this squad, we just need to have them motivated like they were tonight. Stellar performances all over the pitch, with Thompson, De Vita (yet again) and Williams probably the pick of the bunch.

Grim I'm off to the bookies tomorrow for a very good Christmas..... For those that doubt see the majority fnTown fans that stayed at the end to salute our Emperor.

That was some of the best football I've ever seen us play. Extraordinary stuff.

Paolo's note review with radio Wiltshire also well worth a listen. Praising the players on the bench and in the stands for their commitment during training. Tat everyone fights to get into the team which means training is so good which results in great performances.

We've been threatening that for ages and frankly I should think Ronnie Moore was happy to get out at only five. We've had injuries and come up against inspired keepers and hit woodwork countless times.

Enjoy your Christmas all comrades and those that didn't before start to believe what Grim and I have been saying for ages.... We're winning this league....

Back to back to back promotions coming. Watching the birth of a managerial legend. (Isn't he already)?! Build a statue of him when he takes us into the the Premiership.....

Only one word for that first half performance.

WOW

Most complete team display you will see IMO. Hollands and Ferry were awesome in midfield. The passes were quick, intelligent and Tranmere didn't know which way to turn.

They couldn't handle Williams's pace and Martin (really deserved a goal) linked with him and the midfield superbly.

Ritchie and De Vita were fantastic and delivered real quality balls into the box.

Defence once again was outstanding, that is two games running where the opponents have not had a chance inside our penalty area, six attempts on goal all from distance speaks volumes. IMO the most important signing Paolo can make in January is Ward on a permanent deal or at least extend to the end of the season.

There were many options for MOM but I have to admit that I was a bit surprised when McCormack was announced. I suspect most of the crowd were as well judging by the reaction but hey ho the TEAM performance is more important and that CANNOT be knocked tonight.

MORE PLEASE.

Merry Christmas to all Town Fans,

Back home after one of the best games I can recall in recent times. Wilsey, Den and mikek summed it up well. I was so impressed with the total domination we retained throughout. You saw glimpses of what Tranmere could do given the opportunity but that's all it was - glimpses. It was such a strong team performance that it seems wrong to have a MoM award. I would give 8s across the board with the exception of Devera, Thompson, Ritchie and Williams who I would give 9s. Such a good real football night. If you could have gone and didn't - cry because you will wait a long time to see better.

Just got back from one of the greatest swindon nights of my life but also probably nights full stop. Paid for my son and daughter to be mascots for xmas present and what a game to pick. Firstly i've got to say how brilliantly Swindon organise this as a club, George and Brenda the hosts are amazing and was a wonderful experience from start to finish, with them getting to meet all the players, meet PDC personally and go on the hallowed turf and go out with their favourite players (Macca and Ferry respectively, although Wes is also my lads fav as well). I'm a pro PDC supporter who occasionally doesn't like some of his rants but what a charming man he was in person, making the kids feel special, posing for pics and autographs and picking them up and generally making their day. Think i might forgive the odd rant from now on lol!! And then to the game itself, what a first half performance, we tore them apart and could have had even more. Many, many top performances out there. Macca did play well, especially first half, but overdid a few times 2nd and MOM for me was between Ritchie, Raffa and Nathan. Wes had little or nothing to do. I love the way Nathan snaps into the tackle and got forward really well in first half where he was found a few times with excellent passing from Ferry and Ritchie. Dev and Wardy were rock solid, sign him up! Raffa was class first half, great positioning, great touch and control, a really intelligent footballer, Ferry was usual self, all over the pitch, harrying the oppositon and neat and tidy passing with some incisive through balls as well. Dont think was bad injury just precaution. Hollands had best game i've seen from him, one lovely outside of the boot ball to Ritchie and good to see him notch as well. Miller was decent when on as well. Ritchie was excellent, won the ball a few times with his anticipation, some good deliveries, shots, through balls and goal to boot as well. Willo was very sharp tonight, could have had 5 but for some good saves and missed pen!! Impressed with Martins strength, hold up play and link up play but still think the best is yet to come form him. Both Roberts and Collins also played part when on, not a bad performance all round tonight. On penalty, PDC went mental and to an extent i agree, i would not have thought Willo was a pen taker and should stick with nominated pen taker whatever score or no of goals a player on, plus more important for Martin to get off mark fullstop than Willo to get a hat trick. Had to laugh when Willo came off, PDC did his classic shake his hand then smack him round the back of the head to tell him off, Willo just laughed. A great, great night. COYR!

I rate Williams as a superb player at this level and maybe even higher. 2 goals tonight from balls delivered to his feet. That's what he needs, not aerial battles with brick outhouses. I wouldn't be too harsh on his penalty attempt either. His concentration was clearly broken by the mixed messages he was getting.

"I've never seen a team dominate and carve a defence apart quite like Swindon have against Tranmere in this first half this evening"

Perhaps some of you missed the above post by Louis.

Not only the best football you have seen at STFC but probably you will see anywhere.

Same goal difference as the other red team Man-u, and only Gillingham and Port Vale have a better one at +21. Thats the = 3rd best in 4 leagues.

Roll LO and hope we keep the players motivated.

First half superb. Everyone played well. Ferry made some fantastic runs and passes, Nathan too was right on top of his game. Once Si went off injured and Raffa and Williams were subbed we looked pretty ordinary again - no real pace or guile. Why doesn't Raffa get to stay on? I just don't get it. As soon as he went off against Doncaster our hopes of winning and our dominance finished and similar story tonight. Some excellent play tonight though and great relief after recent results at home. COYR!
Well spoken, well done and great for the kids and family,a proper night out.

I know where you're coming from,I did the mascot thing at the orient game (yeah I know) with my 9 year old son and Geroge and Brenda are a credit to the club. Paolo was very charming and simply brilliant with the kids, made a point of chatting with us, the adults too. I'm a harsh critic of PdC with some of his diatribes and I stand by this, I think the way he treats some people at the club is disgraceful, but I think I do also credit him where credit is due...Rome treatments, round the clock commitent, undying passion and that day was amazing for me as much as the kid. What a great night tonight was.

So very pleased for Williams, he certainly went for it and got the result, as did all the other players. The first half was the best 45 minutes I've seen at CG for a very long time.
We came out with a hunger that I have not seen for a very long time. I did say that this team would come together in the New Year, seems I was wrong, it started to come together two weeks ago, seems gelling has happened.
I got my Christmas present tonight 5-0, that will do nicely for me.

Why doesn't Raffa get to stay on?

Syd, I think the answer may be stamina. Raffa was subbed earlier in the year after suffering from cramp so this may be a reason.

Another possibility, which we saw quite often last season, is introducing a fresh pair of legs to run at tired legs. Worked well with Rooney and could again when Roberts starts to fire.

As for looking ordinary, when the subs took place we were 5-0 up, the game was over and we just needed to see the game out.

Poor pen from Willo but at least he scored one good goal can't rave about the tap in my old wheelchair bound 92 year old grannie would have scored that. Important we keep the loan signings for the rest of the season in my opinion. Martin has good vision and did play well and deserved a goal, Hollands not flashy but works hard, reads the game well, has an eye for a pass and is better than both Miller and Navarro for me. Ward almost Greer like at the back, and Bostock althogh he didn't get on tonight is obviously class.

Also vey pleased De Vita has come good. I really thought he was on his way out with the arrival of Luke Rooney last season, then Holmes, and then Roberts, but he has seen them all off. Well done to him.

Unbelievable last night!

Certainly made me eat my words/comments over the last few weeks. We seem to perform better against the best sides.

Not getting carried away though, and being careful of rose tinted glasses appearing. If we beat Portsmouth and get good a good result against Bournemouth then I will be definitely convinced all is well. However we have been here before - Stevenage away!.

Some people will say with the money PDC has spent it should be this way :-)

Glad you met PDC also in person. His passion just shines through but equally he comes across as a normal "football supporter" and a respectful guy.

COYR!
Great post and so glad your children enyoyed the experience. One never to forget.
Glad you met PDC also in person. His passion just shines through but equally he comes across as a normal "football supporter" and a respectful guy.

My two lads are mascots for the Crewe game and not sure who is more excited me or the kids.
My eldest has done it before and I am glad you mention George & Brenda two wonderful human beings.

Bet you're still buzzing :)
My son is mascot at home on new years day.
I don't know who is more excited either.
wil be a great day I am sure.
