SWINDON TOWN: Di Canio hails his players
6:00am Wednesday 6th February 2013 in Local By Sam Morshead
Swindon Town boss Paolo Di Canio at the final whistle last night at Colchester
PAOLO Di Canio wanted the media spotlight to focus on his players after they battled to a 1-0 victory at Colchester yesterday.
James Collins’ second-half goal was enough to net the Robins all three points and send them third in the League One table, and after the game Di Canio did not want to take any questions from the assembled press.
He rejected requests from national outlets for their customary post-match interviews and only addressed the local radio and the Advertiser, praising his squad in a brief statement.
“This is my players’ victory. If someone would have committed like my players did, even 10 per cent of what they did, we could be a Champions League club,” he said.
“Today once again we saw the fantastic lads, what they did is not easy.
“We had 14 or 15 and have many problems and today we made many mistakes technically, but they are fantastic.
“I want only to say this, thanks to everybody and thanks to the fans.
“I hope somebody is going to behave even only 10 per cent like they did today and then maybe this club will have very good health for the future.
“It can have a very good future in a professional way.
“I wanted to say only a few words about my lads.”
Di Canio’s short statement will cue speculation from Swindon fans regarding his future, following the revelations he is considering his position at the club and the fact he was entered as third favourite by some bookmakers for the now-vacant Nottingham Forest manager’s job after Alex McLeish left the County Ground yesterday.
However, it is believed that he is waiting for the sale of the club to be complete before making any major decisions. The takeover is likely to be completed by the end of the week, with a five-strong consortium hoping to receive Football League approval.
Once the sale is sanctioned, it is expected that Di Canio will get the go-ahead to complete the signings of Marlon Pack, Danny Green and Bradley Wright-Phillips, whose proposed moves to Wiltshire were blocked by the League on deadline day.

The reason I ask is that currently, they are adding to the massive uncertainty around the County Ground when they could put everyone's mind at rest by saying what their plans are if the takeover is allowed to go through.
All they'd need to say is that (A) They want Paolo to stay and (B) They are going to try to get the 3 targeted players to Swindon.
After that, if Paolo decides he still wants to go, there's not a lot more they can do - however, their current silence allows headlines like those in the Mirror (link in one of the posts above) to be printed and de-stabilise our club.

That alone would compensate for any wage that he receives.
The "story" is a non-starter, nothing more than guesswork based on events that happened at Banbury.

Nobody yet knows who the consortium members are.
To date the only name we have confirmed is Jed McCrory and he is subject to a Non disclosure agreement.
I hardly think it likely that some mirror hack is going to be first on his list of priorities when it comes to discussing the plans for STFC.

"Cash-strapped Swindon are ready to sack manager Paolo di Canio – because he is too expensive.
The extrovert Italian faces the axe despite a good run of results at the League One promotion chasers, where he is paid a thumping salary.
Di Canio claimed last week that he was “considering his position” after star Matt Ritchie was sold and he was given no money for new players.
Now Swindon’s potential new owners are poised to change manager if they are given Football League blessing to take control in the next 48 hours.
Buyer Jed McCrory is keen to land Brian Stein and Mike Newell as the new management team after the pair worked together at Luton.
Stein is pals with former Banbury United supremo McCrory. Newell has been out of the game since a spell at Hartlepool but is keen to return.
Di Canio’s exit would be unpopular with Swindon fans but the former Celtic, Sheffield Wednesday and West Ham star's reign has been a strain on the Town coffers, with his own wages a major factor in the imminent change."
what a load of tosh! if this is true then the club may as well pack up now, can any potential owner seriously think that the way to endear himself to the fans is to sack the best manager this club has had for long long time...

Well to sack him you have to pay him 100% of his salary - so there would be no cost saving!
.
It would in fact cost more as they then have to pay Newell/Stien on top
.
Then add on top what others have said gate reductions and stars like Ferry walking out (he's 24 now so NO compensation) and they will see even more losses
.
Suicide is an understatement - you do not sack a sucessful and popular manager!
.
Also if this is the plan why did GUV not break it? He's in the know remember!

We've got a far more complex scenario from we're all led to believe:
....
The article on Friday 6th July was:
Port Vale are still waiting for the Football League to rubber-stamp Keith Ryder's takeover of the npower League Two club.
Lancashire businessman Ryder and administrators Begbies-Traynor last week completed all the necessary paperwork for the sale of the club.
But the footballing authorities are yet to confirm the deal.
A club statement on Friday read: "In accordance with Football League Regulation 94.1 - Publication of ownership.
"Port Vale F.C. Ltd is owned 100% by Mr. Keith Ryder."
===
Good job there are no games for 10 days after Saturday!! Come on FL!!
Un- - surprisingly Premiership take-overs seem to be faster - better lawyers?

Keith Ryder who tried to buy Port Vale didnt succeed and it went on for months June to September but the club were also in Admin. Sept sees headlines 'his offer is dead' so there are many hurdles to overcome regarding finance. Im hoping that Jeds consortium has the necassary funds that are viable to take over our beloved club.

But if the new owners do as they say in the paper they will be making a massive mistake.
Why would you do that to a successful manager and bring in someone who has been out of management for a long time.
I know he has the Luton connections and is friendly with the Steins but i can see alot of fans rebelling if what is printed in the rag mirror paper is true.
Paolo is massively popular with the fans at STFC and after what he has done ofr the club how can you replace him.
So what if he is expensive. I can imagine as well that if he is replaced come the summer alot of the players will go as well and then we will have a meiocre manager and players and back to where we were two years ago.
I know its all ifs and buts at the moment but Paolo must know something is up and i just get this feeling he is hanging on until saturday to say goodbye to us.
Cant see him going to Forest though as their owner seems to be dictating what players he wants in and cant see Paolo putting up with that but i do think he will be hanging on for the west ham situation as Allardyce hasnt been offered a new contract yet which runs out in the summer.
As the say goes you get what you pay for and if the new lot are going to do things on the cheap then if they think they will increase the fan base im sorry but it will go the other way.
Are they really interested in the club or if they are devlopers are they really just interested in developing around the ground that has always been spoken about and the club will be secondary.
None of us know but worrying times i feel and i feel sorry for Paolo at the moment as he has been treated like s**t by AB and Patey and if thie new lot do as we read then i can see a massive fan rebellion.

Huge revolt from Swindon fans if he got rid of Pdc
I was there last night and the passion he has is amazing all 337 of us last night let him know what he means to us. Jed was also there last night and he must of heard us sing Pdc 's name
We must do the same Saturday let the new board know we will not accept being treated like a bunch of idiots
And also let them know how much Pdc means to us
Now is the time for us as fans to have our say And our voices should be heard loud and proud in the name of Pdc
We love u Pdc!!!!!!!

If anything I am amazed the Football League can rush through due diligence tests in such a short space of time. You think of the limited resources they have, how useless they are, the difficulty in obtaining information (particularly for foreign owners), and the number of dodgy owners that have infiltrated the lines, and five working days is remarkable.
As to a Paolo pay-off, we would have to pay 100% of his salary for his contracted period. So that would be pointless. But what if Paolo is on a lower salary but much bigger bonus if we reach the Championship? That would be different.

I was knocked back by some when I predicted we'd go top in February. This is a real probability now and could happen as early as Saturday.
Of course this is all dependant on a couple of things, can we field a team ? can the 2 teams above us not win ? will the takeover be completed ? will we still have the maestro in charge ? and will we get these three loan signings ?
I believe that the answers to these questions will be 100% positive.

If the new owners let him go i for one wont renew my season ticket as it would be not only crapping on Paolo but also us as fans and the players and by doing that it suggests to me they just want to run the club to tick over with no real ambition.
If this club does get to the championship the rewards are very high in TV, sponsorship etc.
To be successful you have to invest in the right areas so to me we have the manager we have the players and with 3 additions we will get promoted without a doubt.
so Jed listen to what you are being told here the fans want Paolo to stay if he stays you will have all the fans on side of the opposite happens you will have a massive rebellion.

We are only getting all this press speculation because of Paolo. I'm not saying its a bad thing, far from it. But there are people, so called pundits and experts, in football that just love failure. It just so happens that Swindon are a club that looks, on the face of it, like the next club to fail.
Whilst this is a possible scenario, the opposite is also very likely.
Paolo is bringing this club notoriety, which I think is a positive thing. Just like José Mourinho, the BBC loves Paolo because his is the hot topic of the moment. Succeed or fail, its just a story.
So all together now....
Paolo Di Canio, Paolo Di Canio,
Who needs Mourinho
We've got Di Canio

There should be a rallying call to support Paolo for saturday so all those that went to Wembley need to get in the ground saturday and its only £15 not a great fixture being Hartlepool but it doesnt matter Paolo needs to get all the support from us fans on saturday by constantly singing his name. I don't know how near the mark that is, but in todays football world it sounds reasonable, his marketing value alone has probably covered his wages.
The only statement I have read from the new owners was they are looking forward to working with Paolo and support him to get us into the Championship. Until we hear otherwise that doesn't sound although they are planning to part company with Paolo unless Paolo himself decides that's what he wants. As others have said it would cost them more to cancel his contract than letting him get on with his job, if we can get these 3 loanees in, things will settle down, least wise until the end of season and with their arrival being delayed a week, it will mean we can keep them until May, which could be an advantage if we have any more rescheduled games that cannot be fitted in before the Scunthorpe game on the 27th April.

The Maestro is massive on strength and conditioning and fitness. Thinking about this long and hard I don't see him taking on another team mid season. I'm hoping he'll stay but if he doesn't I don't think it will be to walk into another job.
As a few of us have said I can't see any downside for the Maestro staying until the season end. He's used the Ritchie debacle to unit the players, the fans and the management together. He's massive on psychology and it's clear from Macca's comments post the Crawley game that they've made it clear to him that despite the tough regime they want him to stay.
Think we'll keep him to the season end and as I've said all along wouldn't put it beyond him giving us another season if he gets any kind of backing from the new board. (Assuming it goes through).
Not many managers have done back to back to back promotions!!!

There's only so much he can say without being in breach of the non-disclosure terms, but this appears to be the news we have all been hoping for.
Now, if they have not already, get around the table a.s.a.p. and put this awful sideshow to bed, hoist the metaphorical Swindon Town united flag and lets get first to the top, then out of this league..WITH PAOLO LEADING THE WAY.

Come on everyone, try and get past the hype, speculation, worry, rumour, scaremongering..... etc.
Patience and / or facts. Thats what we need and nothing else. We will all know well enough what is to happen in the next 48 hours. Keep open minds and crossed fingers - all else is a waste of your nerves and time.
Was there last night at Colcheter and what a great game. We sang, we laughed and we made the players and PDC know how much we care and want them to keep pushing through.
The whole night reminded me of why I am and always will be a STFC fan. The trip on the bus where we made new friends, put the world right and took the pi55 out of each other. In the ground at the bar, a few beers and more merriment and a warm of the vocal chords. Then pitch side, applauding the team, ritual mocking and ridicule of home fans and ground - more merriment. Kick off, only voices heard - ours as we motivated and cheered on the Town. Half time, more beers and merriment and more friends. Second half - the ecstacy of a goal and the nerves as we fought and ground out a well defended win and 3 points. Then the afterwards as we applauded the team and sang their praises and then the emotional chanting and pleading to PDC to stay. Back on the bus, more comraderies and targeted mickey taking.
Got home worn out but happy - why - because I am an STFC fan. As such I am going to be there whatever, for such nights as these - because they make up for the bad days. Players, Managers and Boards will come and go but the one true constant is the fans - my friends and extended family.
Warmth and respect!!
See you Sat and COYR!! 3 more points and PDC to stay please.

Yes, McCrory & the consortium have signed a NDA, but surely that only covers the details of the deal that they have put together to buy the club. If it included not being able to say anything at all, then yer man Jed is in breach of it by refuting what The Mirror claimed this morning in the story widely quoted on here.
Consequently, there would be nothing stopping them from making a statement backing Paolo and confirming that they would be trying to bring in the same 3 loan targets we were trying to sign on 31st January.
