PADDY Fitzpatrick has met with Kelvin Young’s manager Keith Mayo to discuss a potential clash with his light-heavyweight prospect Sam Smith.

The 23-year-old secured his first stoppage win of his fledgling career on Saturday night while Young was unsuccessful in his bid to become Swindon’s first two-weight Southern Area champion.

However, the Ferndale Road-based fighter, who will be out again in September, believes that he is ready and able to not only step into the ring with the former IBO inter-continental super-middleweight champion but also beat him.

Now his trainer Fitzpatrick says that he met with Mayo earlier this week to discuss a potential showdown.

“Sniper wants this fight,” Fitzpatrick said. “I spoke with Kelvin after his fight (with Jack Morris) on Saturday and he says he would fight Sniper “So you’ve got the two fighters wanting the bout, now it is about sorting the detail.

“It doesn’t matter where the fight happens, but Eamonn (O’Kane, who was trained by Fitzpatrick before the middleweight retired earlier this year) is bringing his King Kane Promotions to Swindon and putting on a show where Duke (Luke Watkins) will be the main event.

“We could get the fight on there and it would be great for Swindon.”

Fitzpatrick also said that he is looking to have his unbeaten cruiserweight Watkins in a position to fight for a British title by March.

The 26-year-old took his perfect record to nine wins from nine on Saturday as he out-pointed Dmitrij Kalinovskij.

That success moved Watkins up to seventh in the BoxRec.com British cruiserweight rankings.

“Duke is likely to be out again in September and then the aim is to for him to have a fight with an international flair about it on King Kane’s show before Christmas,” the Irish trainer said.

“We are not really interested in going down the Southern Area route at this stage as (champion) Wadi Camacho is ranked below Duke.

“I want to try and get him up the rankings where by March he is ready to make a push for the British title.”
