‘SHOULD have gone to Specsavers’ is often yelled at referees by football fans.

So it may amuse supporters that Haine & Smith Opticians, which has branches all over the country including in Swindon, is to sponsor the match officials for the Wiltshire League cup finals, being played at Corsham Town on Saturday.

General secretary Jim Thorn said: “Some might see some irony in their sponsorship of the match officials.

“However, we are extremely grateful that, in these difficult financial times, they are able to support the league.”

New College Swindon and FC Chippenham Youth will contest the Corsham Print Senior Cup Final which kicks off at 2pm, while Intel FC and Ludgershall Sports play in the Fountain Trophies Junior Cup Final (5pm).

Both new College and FC Chippenham Youth will be making their first Senior Cup Final appearances meaning there will be a new name on the trophy.

New College have won the Wilts Premier Division for the past two seasons but look likely to finish in third spot this season, while Chippenham Youth look destined for runner-up spot after just failing to overhaul champions Corsham Town Reserves.

The officials, hopefully not needing the services of their sponsors, are referee David Pound form Devizes assisted by Oderico Rossi from Melksham and Stuart Wootton from Devizes. The fourth official is Tony Welsh from Wilton.

Officiating in the Junior Cup is referee Nick Bull from Swindon assisted by John Graham and Danny Sly, both from Swindon, as is the fourth official Alan Baldwin.

Intel, who joined the league in 2007, reached the semi-final last season and are currently just above midtable in Division One, while Ludgershall Sports are in their first season in the league and look likely to finish runners up to Champions FC Sanford.

n PURTON finish off their Hellenic League Division One West campaign tomorrow when they take on Hook Norton at the Red House.
