SWINDON-BORN Steve Rowbotham will be hoping to further his case for a place at a second Olympics when he takes part in the GB rowing teams' winter assessment this weekend.

Rowbotham, who won bronze in Beijing four years ago, helped qualify the men’s quadruple scull boat for the London Olympics.

And the 30-year-old will be desperate to impress in Boston, Lincolnshire as he aims to win a place in the final team.

The event is one of many tough winter trials that rowers must undergo as they bid to secure their place in London next summer, with Olympic champions Mark Hunter and Zac Purchase among those racing individually on the gruelling stretch of water.

Fellow Olympic champions Andrew Triggs Hodge, Pete Reed and Tom James are just three of the open-weight men who will race in pairs on the same course.

This weekend also represents a chance for those seeking World Under 23 Championship places to catch the eye, such as 21-year-old Michael Evans from Ramsbury, who won bronze in the men’s eight at the 2011 Championships.

The GB Rowing senior trials will be held on the Olympic course at Eton Dorney on March 10-11.
