ANDY Williams has signed a three-year deal with Doncaster Rovers.

The former Town man was available on free transfer after being told he would not be offered a new contract at the County Ground.

Before deciding to join Paul Dickov’s side the striker turned down advances from Bradford City, Scunthorpe, Sheffield United and MK Dons.

Williams was Town’s top-goalscorer last season and indicated he would like to stay with Swindon, however the size of his wage was prohibitive to any new contract. Signed in the carefree spending days of Paolo Di Canio, the 28-year-old’s deal did not fit in chairman Lee Power’s tighter budget.

It seems Swindon’s loss is Doncaster’s gain, with Donny boss Dickov delighted to be able to sign a striker of Williams’ ability and experience.

“To have this calibre of player, a player who knows what it takes to get in to those play-off positions and to stay there is huge for us. Massive, in fact.

“There were a lot clubs interested in Andy, clubs close to us logistically and clubs in the Championship.

“When Andy came here to look around he was impressed with the structure of the club, the stadium, the training ground and, importantly, he commended the style of football that we played when we faced Swindon last season. He will fit in nicely.”

Williams leaves Town with a record of 34 goals in 105 appearances, 24 of those from the bench. The majority of those goals coming in a stellar show last season where he returned from a serious knee injury to score 22 times.
