SWINDON Town youngster Jordan Stewart made his debut for Northern Ireland’s U21 side on Thursday night.

The 20-year-old forward, who had already earned two U19 caps for his country, was introduced as a second-half substitute by manager Jim Magilton against France at Guingamp’s Stade de Roudourou but was powerless to prevent his side losing 1-0, with the home side’s Enzo Crivelli netting eight minutes from time.

Northern Ireland are currently second-from-bottom in their qualifying group for 2017’s European U21 Championships in Poland but will be hoping to secure their first victory in Group Three when they host bottom side Ukraine at Mourneview Park next Tuesday.

Meanwhile, Town loanee Louis Thompson was an unused substitute as Wales U21s claimed a dramatic 2-1 victory over Armenia to move top of Group Five on Friday afternoon.

Ellis Harrison put the hosts in front from the penalty spot after Wesley Burns was brought down in the box and following Gor Malakyan’s equaliser, Wales thought they were heading for a draw at Nantporth but Harry Wilson fired home in the 91st minute.

Midfielder Thompson will be hoping to be involved when Wales take on Romania at Wrexham’s Racecourse Ground on Tuesday.
