SWINDON Town chairman Lee Power has never wavered in his belief that he can get the club into the Championship.

The 43-year-old has come under criticism from certain sections of Town’s fans that he has not been interested in getting the club promoted and is more interested with making a quick buck.

While Power admitted that he is a businessman and would like to one day make money out of the club, he insists that the only way he can do that is by getting the club promoted.

Swindon came within 90 minutes of achieving that aim last season and while he has acknowledged that this campaign has not reached those heights, he says he would never risk the future of the club by splashing the cash needlessly in search of higher tier football.

“One million per cent I am in it to make money, no other reason, I am a business person,” he told a fans phone-in on BBC Wiltshire.

“Unfortunately with football nobody does. I believe I can, but the only way I can ever make money out of this football club is by getting them first and foremost into the Championship and secondly into the Premier League.

“I might be a lunatic but that is what I am going to try and do.

“I do believe that one day we will get to the Championship otherwise I wouldn’t bother owning the football club and spending the amount of money I have spent on it.

“The only way I am going to get it back is believing in what I believe in, and we’ll see whether I am proved wrong in the next couple of years, and trying to get the football club into the Championship.

“I believe I am doing it the right way without putting the club in jeopardy - that is always going to be my way. I think I am building the right bricks and foundation for the football club.”

With the transfer window still open for two-and-a-half weeks, Power is looking to bring in some extra numbers but it is unlikely to happen before a permanent manager is appointed.

“We’re looking at one or two - that is what the transfer window is there for,” he added. “We’re aware of the loan markets and some of our loan people have gone back and we are keeping our eye on one or two players we are trying to tie up.

“These are things that will be discussed but obviously we will discuss that with whoever will be the manager and that is why we need to make that appointment early next week.”
