LEE Power says Swindon Town are fighting to keep their first-choice striking line-up together ahead of the summer transfer window.

Nicky Ajose has proven a big hit in League One since signing for Town on a free transfer at the start of the season, racing to the top of the scoring charts but missed out on being named the division’s player of the year on Sunday night.

The 24-year-old still has two years left on his contract at the County Ground but strike partner Jonathan Obika’s deal runs out at the end of the current season (it is believed he has an option for a further year).

Town chairman Power revealed the club had already received several enquires about the pair but are desperate to keep hold of their front two.

“We have had a number of calls already for Nicky. When you are the league’s top goal scorer that is going to happen, that’s not unusual,” Power told BBC Wiltshire.

“And also for Jon; I think Jon has been fantastic this season and we want to keep the two together, if we can.

“At this level, to keep everyone on long-term contracts doesn’t normally happen. Lads like Jon – Jon is into his last year – you have got to try to get him to resign a deal, which is difficult if he has got other offers.

“It’s difficult. We want to keep our best players and attract new players as well and try to build a strong team for next year.

“We’ve had to do it before, we’re no different to anyone else, and I am sure we will do it again.”

Power also hinted that he hopes to extend Jake Kean’s loan until the end of the season as a solution to their goalkeeping crisis, however, Football League rules state that this can only be extended on a week-by-week basis.

The Norwich stopper made his debut in Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at home to Bury, two days after joining Town on an emergency seven-day loan with Tyrell Belford joining regular number one Lawrence Vigouroux on the injury list.

Vigouroux is on a season-long loan at the County Ground from Liverpool and Power is still hopeful of making that deal permanent.

“I would have thought so (Kean’s loan will be extended). I don’t think either goalkeeper will be playing again this year,” added Power.

“Whether we can try to do something with Lawrence is one of the key priorities.

“He is a Liverpool player and we have to respect them and whatever they want for the player, we have to try to do a deal that suits them rather than us.

“Not a lot will happen now until the summer because of the window.”
