SWINDON Town have signed midfielder John Goddard from National League side Woking, subject to Football League and FA approval.

The 22-year-old moves to Town for an undisclosed fee after agreeing a three-year deal at the County Ground, with the club having an option for a further year on the player.

Town are understood to have beaten off competition from several other Football League clubs, including from the Championship, to sign Goddard.

Swindon chairman Lee Power said: “We were aware of the number of clubs interested in signing the player and we are delighted to have finally secured John’s signature with him being one of the hottest properties in non-league Football.

"From the moment we were given permission to speak with the player and agree terms, Woking have been absolutely first class in their handling of the situation.

"I have been mightily impressed with the professional way in which Geoff Chapple (director) has dealt with myself and it will be fitting for me to bring Swindon Town to Woking in pre-season to allow John to say farewell to his beloved fans.”

Former Reading player Goddard signed for Woking in September 2013 and has gone on to become a key member of the Cards’ squad and helped them finish 12th in the National League last season.

Goddard came up through the Royals’ Academy and was awarded a professional contract in summer 2011 but was released at the end of that season following the club’s promotion to the Premier League.

He spent the 2012-13 campaign at Hayes & Yeading in National League South upon his departure from the Madejski Stadium before joining Woking that summer.

Goddard has enjoyed an impressive season for Garry Hill’s side, finishing as their top scorer with 20 goals from midfield in all competitions from 49 appearances.

Woking boss Hill added: “John has been outstanding for me, and of course the club. He is well grounded, and conducts himself brilliantly both on and off the pitch.

"He has had a fantastic season, and for a midfield player to get the amount of goals he has, it’s no wonder that so many clubs were chasing his signature.”
