NATHAN Thompson is attracting interest from a number of clubs, the Advertiser understands.

The Swindon Town skipper has entered the final year of his current deal at the County Ground, with any talks to extend that contract yet to take place.

It is understood that neither party are concerned by the lack of talks over Thompson extending his stay with Town, although it is believed several clubs are keeping a close eye on the 25-year-old’s situation at Swindon.

Having come up through the ranks at Town, the defender broke into the first team in 2010 when he made his debut in a Football League Trophy clash with Exeter City.

Thompson, who signed a three-year deal in October 2014, was made captain at Town at the start of the 2014-15 season after the previous incumbent, Darren Ward, was released by the club.

The two-time Swindon Advertiser Player of the Year winner, has made nearly 140 appearances for the club and has scored twice.

The skipper struggled with a series of injuries at the start of last season after limping out of the 2015 play-off final after four minutes.

After overcoming injury problems, Thompson made 23 League One appearances last term, scoring in the 2-2 draw at Rochdale in April.

However, over the past two seasons, he has seen sent for an early bath on four separate occasions, the last coming in March's 4-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic.

Before he signed his first professional contract in 2009 at Swindon, it was reported that Premier League clubs Arsenal, Tottenham, Everton and recently-relegated Newcastle United were keeping tabs on the defender.

  • TOWN have confirmed they will take on University College Dublin in the second friendly of their pre-season trip to Ireland later this month.

As revealed by the Adver on Tuesday, as part of a six-day tour, during which Luke Williams’ side will play Shelbourne on Tuesday, July 12, Town are also set to meet UCD on Saturday, July 16 (kick-off 2pm).
