THE future of Swindon Town midfielder Yaser Kasim remains up in the air, with his hopes of appearing at the Olympic Games also in question.

The Iraqi midfielder started in Town’s 6-0 victory over Swindon Supermarine on Saturday, while reports were coming out from his home country saying that he would be left out of the Iraq Olympic squad due to a disciplinary issue.

Kasim was permitted to leave the Iraq training camp in Munich last week for three days to sort out his future at Swindon Town, with speculation rife over a move away from the County Ground.

However, Kasim, who has a chequered past with the national side having briefly retired from international football last year, did not report back and team manager Karim Farhan is expected to drop him for Rio.

Town boss Luke Williams always expected to have the 25-year-old back for the start of pre-season but admits even he doesn’t know what lies ahead for the Iraqi.

“Yaser was always expected to be back at this period because there was a training camp for three weeks and then there was a break and ten he’s due to go back for a second training camp in the build-up to the Olympics,” said the Town boss.

“I’m going to respect Yaser’s request to be given some time to make decisions and arrangements about what is going on on their side.

“He was expected to be on the pitch today (against Marine) and take part in a week of training with us.”
