JONATHAN Obika believes that he and his Swindon Town team-mates have a responsibility to approach Tuesday night’s rearranged clash with Bristol Rovers appropriately.

Town were out of sorts at the County Ground on Saturday as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Bury and striker Obika, who grabbed his first goal of the season after his recent return from injury, believes that Swindon’s players have a duty to respond next time out.

“I feel the gaffer (Luke Williams) and Ross (Embleton); they get us ready and create an intensity for the game, and it’s just up to the players,” Obika told BBC Wiltshire.

“We all know if we haven’t done enough, so it’s up to the players to get it right and we’ll definitely do that on Tuesday.

“This is a game where we didn’t play well. There have been games where we’ve started fast – like Bristol Rovers – so I feel it’s just up to the players to get their mindset right and focus for the game (against Rovers).”

Obika may well have notched a lot earlier than his second-half strike after seeing what would have been a first-half equaliser controversially ruled out for offside.

It seemingly took Town some time to recover mentally from that perceived injustice and the 26-year-old believes that his team should have regained their composure more quickly.

The Swindon frontman said: “I thought I was onside. I think the referee or the lino gave it and must have gone with what they felt.

“Sometimes you get those decisions. I think we just had to go with it and try and get back into the game.

“At times, when you see the defenders put their hands up, you think ‘was I offside, was I onside?’ but as a striker, you try and follow the trail of the ball and try and tuck it in.

“You could see with our reaction that it was quite tough to take but this is football – when things happen, we just have to move on.

“It’s been a tough, tough month getting back fit and getting over an injury but I feel fit now and I’m just ready to play games.

“As a striker, you want to open the account as quickly as possible. Thinking of the team and how we performed, I think in the first half, we definitely need to get right.”
