FORMER Swindon Town manager Danny Wilson has been sacked by Chesterfield after a poor first half of the season.

The Spireites have won just six of their opening 26 league fixtures and are in the relegation zone on goal difference.

Wilson, who was in charge at the County Ground between 2008 and 2011, took over at Chesterfield in December 2015.

Assistant manager Chris Morgan has also left the club, with left-back Ritchie Humphreys named caretaker manager at the Proact Stadium.

Chesterfield director and company secretary Ashley Carson said: “We feel that a change to the management team is necessary at this time to give us the best possible chance of securing our League One status. We hope to be able to announce a new management team soon.

“We would like to thank Danny and Chris for their efforts and wish them all the best for the future.”

  • NORTHAMPTON Town have also decided a managerial change is in order to turn around a bad run of form by sacking Rob Page after less than eight months in charge.

The Cobblers suffered a ninth defeat in 11 matches when they were thumped 5-0 at Bristol Rovers on Saturday and are down in 16th in the table.

Page took over at Sixfields at the end of last season following the departure of Chris Wilder, who led the club to promotion from League Two.

Northampton chairman Kelvin Thomas said: “We are disappointed to make this decision regarding Rob, however, following the recent run of results, we feel that a change is necessary.”

  • CHARLTON Athletic can boast another ex-Swindon Town player in their ranks after signing Nathan Byrne on loan until the end of the season from Championship side Wigan.

The Addicks already have Nicky Ajose in their squad after recruiting the striker from Town last summer.

Byrne helped Swindon reach the League One play-off final in May 2015 but left the club to join just three months later to join Wolves in the Championship, although he was then sold to Wigan after just one season.

Charlton boss Karl Robinson said: “I’m very happy to be able to add Nathan to our squad. When he was at Swindon, he was one of the best players in this league. He plays off the right and can also play as a 10. He can be phenomenal going forward, is very quick and will add energy to the squad.”

  • SHREWSBURY Town have successfully appealed the red card shown to defender Aristote Nsiala in the 1-1 draw at Swindon Town at the weekend.

Nsiala was making his debut for the Shrews and was dismissed for a foul on Luke Norris that resulted in a Swindon penalty early in the second half at the County Ground.

The 24-year-old had only joined the Shrews six days earlier from Hartlepool and will no longer serve a four-match ban that was originally handed out.
