OXFORD United’s fiery frontman Chris Maguire fully expects to be persona non grata at the County Ground on Sunday and says that he’ll only be fuelled further by Swindon Town supporters’ hatred.

The 28-year-old scored both goals when the U’s beat Town 2-0 at the Kassam Stadium in September and Maguire, who thrives off playing wind-up merchant, did little to endear himself to Town fans by celebrating his first strike directly in front of the away end.

The two-time Scotland international is expecting a ‘warm’ reception when bitter rivals Swindon and Oxford renew hostilities this weekend but is warning that any stick directed his way will only encourage him as he looks to fire the U’s to the derby spoils.

“It’s a little team across the road we’ve got a game against,” Maguire told the Oxford Mail.

“I’m looking forward to a warm reception. I’m sure I’ll give them a nice one back.

“Hopefully, they will remember me, obviously for the wrong reasons.

“I’ve been involved in big games before and I like to wind crowds up. They tried to wind me up (in September) and it bounced back and bit them on the backside.

“If they want to keep doing that, I’ll have the last laugh. It just spurs you on if people are shouting at you.

“It’s the best way to shut them up.”

With Town batting to try and get themselves away from the League One relegation zone, Maguire expects to come up against a team not lacking a jot of motivation on Sunday.

He added: “They will try and be up for it because they have to try and put one over us for the first time in years.

“Looking at the league table, they’re not doing too well, but everybody knows a derby match is different. It’s who wants it more and who keeps their composure.”
