“I THINK it is a different plan, it’s a different time, it’s a different league we’re in.”

The message from new Swindon Town boss David Flitcroft is a clear one when it comes to how his side will be playing next season.

With preparations for an assault on League Two already under way, Flitcroft has indicated that he is prepared to steer away from tactics that became so synonymous with the club that chairman Lee Power has coined the phrase ‘the Swindon Way’.

That approach came under much scrutiny last season and a reluctance to deviate essentially cost Town their League One status.

However, Flitcroft has set his stall out early and wants to bring a ‘winning mentality’ to his side first and foremost.

With trips to the likes of Accrington Stanley and Grimsby Town on the horizon, he knows his side must be prepared to roll up their sleeves to achieve that.

“We’ve got to be robust, we’ve got to have a team of characters that can dig in, with some places that you have got to go in League Two that only men can combat that,” he told the Adver.

“I need players with that real winning mentality that we have got to win first before we show our inner qualities.

“You’re competing 11 against 11 and I want every single player committing out of possession and in possession.

“We’ll attack teams certainly, with a vigour and a verve and we’ll be a very dynamic team.

“We probably won’t move the ball around the pitch, as has happened in previous seasons, with as many passes, but certainly the intent and setting up goal scoring opportunities will be at the forefront of everything we do.”

Flitcroft is already looking at his options when it comes to recruitment over the coming two months, Swindon’s style of play having had an impact on that side of the business in the recent past.

However, having guided Bury to promotion in 2015, Flitcroft is aware of what it will take this time around and that approach may have to take a back seat.

“I think style has been at the forefront of a lot of what Swindon has done over a certain amount of time and in my life, and not just football, I have always put substance and structure in front of style,” added the new manager.

“When you get those two things right (you can succeed).

“League Two is a robust league, League One is, but League Two is a very direct, robust league and we’re going to have to have people who want to compete at that level.”
