PHIL Brown has welcomed the idea of granting League Two champions Accrington Stanley a guard of honour ahead of kick-off on Saturday.

Town will host the League Two champions at the County Ground (3pm) to conclude a disappointing 2017/18 season, which will see Brown’s men finish in mid-table.

But Saturday’s visitors, a team reportedly with the lowest budget in League Two, stormed to promotion and the title – earning 93 points from 45 games.

A win at the County Ground would cap a memorable season for John Coleman’s men, who next year will play in the third tier of English football for the first time in history.

Brown, who watched Town play out a frustrating 0-0 draw at Colchester last weekend, wants to recognise Stanley’s efforts throughout the season.

He said: “Full respect goes to John Coleman. He’s done a marvellous job and I tip my hat to him.

“I went to see Lincoln play at Wembley in the Checkatrade Trophy Final. They beat a very strong first division team (Shrewsbury).

“So to beat Lincoln 1-0 (at the weekend) and become champions is a phenomenal achievement and well done to them (Stanley).”

Brown has called on Town fans to turn out at the club’s final fixture of the season, at which Accrington will be acclaimed.

The 58-year-old, who has won just one of his nine games in charge since taking charge of Town in mid-March, plans to end the year on a high – adding Accrington will get ‘no favours’ from his men.

“John (Coleman) knows he won’t get any favours from us and I want my players to think the same,” said Brown.

“I want the Swindon Town supporters to come along.

“If it’s requested, I’ll give them a guard of honour 100 per cent.

“Champions, Accrington Stanley, second division, smallest budget – they absolutely deserve it.

“I’ll carry them onto the pitch, I won’t carry them off it though. Well done to them.”
