PHIL Smith has already seen the back of a couple of worries in the first week of this season but knows his biggest fear is yet to be faced.

The Town keeper admits Saturday's League One opener at Northampton eased any concerns about stepping up a level, while Tuesday's takeover will ensure there is no repeat of his Crawley nightmare.

But with goalkeeping rival Peter Brezovan impressing in Tuesday's Carling Cup tie against Charlton, Smith is unsure who will get the nod for Luton tomorrow, with Town chief Paul Sturrock keeping his cards close to his chest.

Smith said: "I have been told as much as you have. I played Saturday, Peter played Tuesday, and the manager is making a decision from these two games. Whichever way it goes I will deal with it and move on.

"Obviously I hope I play but if not I will get my head down and work hard to get my shirt back.

"I dont think I have put any doubts in his mind about putting me in but you never know what a manager is thinking. I will accept whatever he does."

While waiting to see who will be Sturrock's number one this season, Smith admits Saturday's Sixfields draw showed him he could cope after last campaign's promotion.

Despite conceding before getting a real touch of the ball, the former Crawley man settled in to run Michael Pook close for the man of the match award.

He said: "Saturday was a decent enough result. For a promotion run you look to win at home and draw away so I suppose we are on target for that.

"I thought we played well. I was disappointed the first thing I had to do was get the ball out of the net.

"But I had to get over it and move on and I felt more comfortable after I had the ball in my hands.

"For all the worrying I have done in the summer, I don't know about the others, about playing in this league. It does not seem too different.

"As soon as you get out and start playing it doesnt seem too different playing in the league above.

"The fact that someone has the ball and someone doesn't have the ball is the same in any league.

"I think we came out of that game with a lot of confidence. We carried that on against Charlton."

If given the nod tomorrow, Smith knows Town will have a tough task on their hands with Luton Town strongly tipped to bounce straight back into the Championship after relegation last campaign.

With the likes of Paul Furlong, Paul Peschisolido and Chris Perry in their squad there will be no lack of experience and Smith knows Town will have to be at their very best to get their first League One win on the board.

He said: "Luton will be a big strong team and looking to go straight back up. You would think they will come here confident they will get a result.

"But we are not going to fear them. Why should we? Like I said we are also confident after our start to the season."

While on-the-field things are going very much according to plan for Smith he believes the finalised takeover in Wiltshire will also help settle the players down.

After being part of the Crawley squad who were hit with financial problems just a couple of years back, Smith knows the unsettling influence backroom matters can have but believes Town can now start to look forward.

He said: "You like to know one way or another.

"I dont think it will make too much difference to us but the knowledge it has gone through means we know where we are going.

"We know we can supposedly sign players now so know what to expect.

"It will give a lot of people a lot of breathing space but can't get carried away because you never know when money will disappear, not that I think that will happen here.

"I found that out at Crawley but it will give people the breathing space and freedom they need."
