CLUB captain Ady Williams has reassured fans Paul Sturrock is not about to leave Swindon Town, insisting the spirit at the club has never been better.

Town boss Sturrock is the subject of continued fans' speculation suggesting he is frustrated with life at the County Ground and on the verge of a shock exit.

While Sturrock has publicly admitted he is frustrated with the lack of activity on the transfer front, Williams insists this does not mean the manager is looking for a move away.

"From his manner around the players I never felt Paul was close to walking out or that he had any arguments with anyone," said Williams of just one of the many internet rumours doing the rounds among Town followers.

"He has been very chirpy on the training ground and the spirit among the lads is brilliant at the moment.

"The banter has been flying around and everyone has been getting on really well.

"It would be terrible if he went, but hand on heart I have not even thought for one minute that could happen."

Williams, who is still nursing a knee injury, has become more and more involved with coaching at the County Ground this season.

After watching his Town teammates collect five point from a possible nine so far, the veteran defender is convinced Sturrock, pictured below, is the man to lead the Robins into the Championship.

He said: "You can tell by the players that Paul has signed that he is looking to build for the future of Swindon Town.

"I know all the players were delighted with his appointment last season.

"Since Paul came in the club has been on the up. It's a lot more professional than when I first arrived.

"At the start of the season people were talking about consolidation in League One, but I really think we can push for a play-off place."

And Williams claims Sturrock has not been undermined by the presence of sporting director Rufus Brevett on the training ground, although he admits he is not entirely sure what Brevett's role is.

"As far as we (the players) are concerned, Paul Sturrock is the one who makes all the decisions," said Williams.

"I'm a similar age to Rufus and I've know him for a number of years.

"He's a good guy and he's been around the training ground lots.

"I can honestly say I'm not exactly sure what his job title is but he seems to be working hard behind the scenes."

At the time of going to press the Advertiser has received no response to yesterday's back page comment "Just Tell Us," in which we challenged the powers-that-be at Swindon to be open about their plans for the future of the club.
