SWINDON Town chief executive Martyn Starnes will meet with the Football League next week in a bid to get the club's transfer embargo lifted.

Town were placed under the embargo on October 30 due to unpaid football debts of around £50-60,000.

But with a growing injury list, Swindon are desperate to strengthen their squad after a recent dip in form.

They owe ticket revenue to League One clubs from their away games this season, including £25,000 to Cheltenham Town following their fixture in August.

At the meeting, believed to be on Tuesday or Wednesday, Starnes will attempt to persuade league officials to lift the ban, and the Advertiser understands Town are hopeful of a positive outcome.

Since being slapped with the embargo, Paul Sturrock's side have failed to win, losing 2-1 at home to Doncaster and snatching a 1-1 draw with Leyton Orient thanks to Hasney Aljofree's last minute equaliser on Tuesday.

Town have also missed goalkeeper Phil Smith and defenders Jack Smith, Ady Williams and Jamie Vincent, while Jerel Ifil has played through the pain barrier in recent weeks.

Meanwhile, Andrew Fitton could be confirmed as the new owner of Town next week.

The club are expected to make an announcement in the next few days regarding the bid of the Ramsbury-based businessman's consortium, with the terms of the deal already agreed.

Fitton's team are in the final stages of working through the accounts, and the loose ends surrounding the completion of the deal will then be tidied up before the end of the month.

His consortium are expected to pay the club's £900,000 CVA as well as settling tax bills and historical debts.

Fitton will also outline his vision of the future once contracts have been signed.
