KAID Mohamed insists he has always had faith in his own ability and is hoping for the chance to terrorise a few more League One defences before the season is out.

The Welsh winger made his first league start for Town at Roots Hall on Saturday, playing wide left in an attacking role, and showed enough to suggest he has more to look forward to.

Former Town boss Paul Sturrock gave Mohamed a few substitute appearances earlier in the season but Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Southend gave him his first chance as a starter.

He said: "I really enjoyed it. I mean I have been itching to get on since the start of the season but I thought I played okay and hopefully I get another chance to get in the team and keep proving myself.

"The manager said I would have a chance in the FA Cup but I was injured, which was very frustrating, but I knew when I was fit I would get that chance. He let me know I was playing yesterday.

"I was over the moon and now I need to keep my spot."

Before signing for Town in August, Mohamed was playing semi-professional football in the Welsh League for Carmarthen Town, but he insists he always knew he could make the step up.

He said: "I think we played really well and in the first half they struggled to break us down.

"We defended well, had a few chances and I should have scored to make it 2-1. We did not deserve to lose.

"League One is obviously a good league with some good players and good teams. I have made that step up from playing part time in Wales and I have always known I was good enough to play at this level.

"I think pace is the main thing in football and I believe I have that and so can cause people trouble."

Like the rest of the squad, Mohamed insists the ongoing takeover saga at the County Ground has nothing to do with the players but is keeping his fingers crossed it can reach a rapid conclusion.

He said: "Before the game we said we had to blank everything out that was going on behind the scenes. We need three points to get back up the table. We know a lot of things are going on but we cannot be affected by that, we have to get on with it and concentrate on getting some wins.

"The league is very tight still, so we are still in with a shout. It is not even half way through the season. There is a lot of football to be played. Hopefully we can get three points next game.

"It would be great if things are sorted. We have a lot of injuries and suspensions and hopefully once they are all back we will have a squad to contend with. I think we still have an exciting season ahead."
